Is my relatively new MS 361 worth repairing?

Part of a tree trunk fell on my saw yesterday and did a fair amount of damage. The handle, plastic covers, air cleaner, and cylinder are broken. The saw was bought last year. I looked up a few parts online and its pushing $300.00 for the parts alone. Ughhhhh. I'll take it to the shop on Monday for a real estimate.

Also, welcome to AS! I can assure you that you will get the answers to your question. There are great people in AS.

I think u should save it because like said the model is not made anymore. Secondly sorry a trunk fell on your saw, I almost had that happen to my 044 my friend set it down in the path of the tree when I was felling it with my 250 with an 18 inch bar. Needless to say it landed right next to it and just pushed it out of the way, Got lucky that day. Maybe a parts saw could be a good investment for you and your saw.

Ummmm....well....uhhhhh......YES FIX IT!!!!!! Thats a great saw and even an aftermarket p/c wont cost more than 100-150.

You should be able to find a parts saw for AROUND that estimate ($300)...then you'll have lots of extra parts!

You can't replace it for $300

Fix it and move on. If the covers still fit, duct tape works wonders and gives the saw character. When I used to log or hit the woods now to help out logging from time to time, it's rare I don't see a saw with its share of, "field expedient repairs". It's almost like you can tell the vets from the rookies by the amount of silver green tape holding the covers together.

Have the dealer check the jug and let him give you an opinion as to whether it's compromised or not. If you just lost a part of a cooling fin you're probably ok to go. The handle and any damaged mounts will need to be replaced.

Fair warning, if you cut enough wood, this isn't the last time you'll be facing this situation.

Take Care

i believe you may need rubbing compound to get those scratches out ,wax aint gonna get it today.

Determine which parts can be repaired and which parts must be replaced. The saw will function fine with battle scares but it will not be a proper shelf queen.

Plastic parts can be reshaped with heat and welded easily.

If the cylinder is missing a few fins run it until it is dead. Otherwise you are throwing $ away. Lots of saws working out there missing many more fins than the one in the picture. Modify the mount to attach the cover.

Used 361s are not an uncommon item in the $300.00 range so I would look for a used complete one if you cannot have a saw with broken but repaired parts.

I would not invest the $ to have a Stihl shop replace those parts with new items and pay their labor. That would typically be $$$$$$$$$$$.

Don't worry about a few broke fins. There are plenty of saws out there running and running with dirt and saw chips caked around the cooling fins ...... effectively negating any cooling effect that the fins might produce. After that get some plastic and get it running or name a price and see if one of us wants to buy it off ya.

I have a buddy that wants a used .... discounted 361 for modding .... I'm sure he's not the only one.
