Shot placement or just being really lucky counts for a whole lot too...... Just ask this guy

John, great pictures!
Have any of you seen a 45-70 pistol? Might do the job but I don't think I want to be the one to shoot it...not with my reloads anyway. How about this new "exploding" amo? They don't have any explosives in them but they are suposed to transfer 100% of their energy in 5-7". Suposed to be an anti-terror round or something like that. I will not ever have to worry about bears down here but methed up stupids, that's another thing.
Clint

The 45-70 would be great but definately not the exploding ammo. Your going to want something big that penetrates more than 5-7". I've shot deer with hornady super shock tip in both 30-06 and 243. They do massive damage on deer. I no longer load them for deer because there is to much meat loss. And I would never load them for bear because in a bigger tougher animal you are not going to get the penetration to reach the vitals. Any thing that uses a big heavy slug is what you want. Forget the fancy ballistic tips, hollow points or exploding ammo. Good old fashioned lead tips with enough umph behind them to penetrate is what you want.

This thread reminds me of the time I saw my uncle walking back across the pasture carrying a Mac 10-10. Unfortunately the bull thought he was getting too close to his girls and turned to face him down. There is my uncle with the mac in his hands standing face to face with a big holstein bull witch is snorting and pawing at the ground. I've never seen somebody pull the start cord on a mac so hard or fast in my life. I've run that mac before and can atest that it can be pretty tempermental. The old mac didn't even fart for him. Lucky for my uncle he wasn't too far from the fence. As the bull started his charge he drops the saw and starts off running with a big old full on his heels. I think he cleared that 5' fence with 2' to spare. After it was all over I never laughed so hard in my life.:greenchainsaw:

if you place your shots well you can take a girzzly down with a .223

Agreed, the key is the shot placement. I wouldn't recommend it, but a .223 will do the job. I shot an Elk with my 22-250 55 grain hollowpoint. It was 137 yards, dropped where it stood.

I'll take one of these.....

A guy at work sent me this email I instantly thought of this thread.

King season is over, and since I had a day off before silvers start, I thought I would go for a walk! This occurred at 11:16 am this morning (Sunday), just 2/10 of a mile from my house.

ON OUR ROAD while walking my dogs (ironically trying to get in shape for hunting season!) for the record, this is in a residential area-not back in the woods . . . No bow hunting . ... . No stealth occurring . . . I heard a twig snap . . . And looked back . . . Full on charge-a huge brownie, ears back, head low and motorin' full speed! Came with zero warning; no Woof, no popping of the teeth, no standing up, nothing like what you think or see on TV! It charged from less than 20 yards and was on me in about one-second! Totally surreal . . . I just started shooting in the general direction . . . And praise God that my second shot (or was it my third?) rolled him at 5 feet and he skidded to a stop 10 feet BEYOND where I was shooting from . ... . I actually sidestepped him and fell over backwards on the last shot . . . And his momentum carried him to a stop past where I fired my first shot!

It was a prehistoric old boar .... . . No teeth . . . No fat . ... . Weighed between 900-1000 Lbs and took five men to DRAG it onto a tilt-bed trailer! Big bear . . . Its Paw measured out at about a 9 1/2 footer!

Never-ever-thought 'it' would happen to me! It's always some other smuck . . . Right?

Well, no bull .. . . I am still high on adrenaline . . . With my gut in a Knot (felt like I did 10000 crunches without stopping)! Almost puked for an hour after .. . . Had the burps and couldn't even stand up as the troopers conducted their investigation! Totally wiped me out .. .. . can't even put that feeling into words . .. . By far the most emotion I have ever felt at once!

No doubt that God was with me, as I brought my Ruger .454 Casull (and some "hot" 350 grain solids) just for the heck of it . . . And managed to draw and snap shoot (pointed, never even aimed!) from the hip! Total luck shot!

All I can say is Praise God for my safety and for choosing to leave the wife and kids at home on this walk!

Stopping power

This has been an amusing thread to read. Although I have never been in a position myself to fend off large, angry animals, I've done much reading on hunting, rifles, ballistics and African game. See the story at the attached link to get an idea about the difference between stopping power and a cartridge that's adequate for hunting. There is a difference, and it's been proved over and over for a couple of decades now that big bullets are the key. And with any luck, most of us will never have to test out such theories.

Oh nuts someone beat me to it.:)

Back to my question, how does a liberal goverment get the power in such a wilderness and why do they care?

Don't Canadians sympathasize with those others in the wild?

The Fiberals rely on the 416 and 905 Area codes for a great number of king making seats in parliament. Actually, in all of Canada's urban centres, whenever someone is murdered by any type of firearm (usually an Ileagal firearm smuggled from Buffalo, Seattle, or Detroit) the Looney left proposes nonsensical bans on legal firearms owned by law abiding citizens. People in Urban areas are the least likely to require firearms for sport, food or protection and unfortunately many have been hoodwinked into believing that further restrictions on gun ownership will result in less crime.

This is nonsense of course we only need to look at Switzerland and Australia. In Switzerland there is scarcely a crime problem and there is probably more guns than people; just about every home has an automatic weapon while in Australia guns have been prohibited for years and there has not been a reduction in violent crime because of it http://www.smh.com.au/news/national...in-war-on-crime/2005/10/28/1130400366681.html. Criminals in Australia still seem to be well armed despite the laws that prevent law abiding from defending themselves

:agree2:sad but true....

I heard a story of a guy up in Alaska laying out a place for a cabin using an axe. A grizzly charged him and before he could pull his side arm pistol the bear had him bowled over and on the ground. The guy still had his wits about him enough to land one solid whack with the axe across the bear's forehead with such force that the axe handle broke. He knew he had one shot so he gave it all he had and the axe could not take it. Now the bear was mad as well as hungry. The bear mauled the guy up pretty bad and then tried to bury him in debris. The guy was conscious and moaning so the bear shook him by the head. At this point he lost consciousness. The bear buried him and left. The dude woke up a while later and was able to go to a road and get help. He needed something like 1500 stiches to close up all the wounds and he barely had enough blood in him to make it out of the woods. The gun did no good to him. The axe did nothing but make the bear mad.

Me, I will stay away from bears.

No bear with saw confrontation. But I have had some bad dealings with them, in the bush, when I had a saw. All black bears, which stalk and kill, unlike grizzlies who kill because you are on their turf. I have thrown rocks, yelled, and so forth, the classic move for them is to circle around and above you. I swear they think "Can I take this guy? Will it be worth it? Will I get hurt?"

When I was spacing years ago, my boss had a pistol grip 12 gauge. But in thick bush, especially around creeks or in the wind, you might not get off a shot. They give me the creeps, I like watching them from a pickup.

if you place your shots well you can take a girzzly down with a .223, many people hunt them with AR-15s let me dig up a pic.

Wow, someone ignorant enough of a bear to attempt killing a charging bear with a .223. Interesting. I wonder why the Marine Corps wants to dump the .223....and men are a bit easier to knock down...weigh less...and don't charge with the fury of a bear.

AR-15's come in some more realistic bear calibers....308 Win.....300 RSAUM . and some that would ACTUALLY STOP a charge.....450 SOCUM and the .500 BEUWOLF. Anything less on a bear.....and your a steaming pile of bear.......

When I get to hunt the brownie or grizzly...my 30/06 w barnes 180grn or 200grn bullets would be minimum. A .338/06 or one of the magnums would be better.

A .223 with a flat pointed solid bullet (heavy for caliber 70grn or higher, with the right barrel twist to stabilize it) would still not be much with a charging balck bear....Would not attempt that, even on a huge bet.

Well I dont think if you are working with loud chainsaws you are startling them but it might be wise to be packing some long range Bear Repellent on you so if you have another close encounter you can spray that bear.

I wouldn't be messing with trying to chainsaw that guy, and trying to shoot it with a pistol ... poor bear, you're in his house!

exactly..... there are cameramen who have been photographing bears for decades without the protection of a chainsaw.....;)

Actually anywhere there is a large urban centre, or influence from it.
You are absolutely correct. With 7 million voters in GTA, then the surrounding areas as well.. At times Ontario has been very Liberal at the polls, the particular area I am in has not, and been Conservative as long as I can remember. However, we are quite rural, and everybody around us or at least south of us is Liberal.

Because of early Quebec support, Canada has had a very liberal history. The last Liberal leader worth his salt was in the 1970's. Since then they have all been cut of the same cloth, and attractive to the larger city population but frankly worthless to all.

How did they get to where they are, mostly blind lies which the city voters eat up. Not just about the gun issue mentioned, but frankly about anything.

If you are somewhat interested in the history check here:

ya gotta be a real coward to feel good about shooting a bear.

the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are misnomers. republicans might call themselves "conservatives" but they are really just BIG-GOV pukes who rely upon their jack-booted thugs to enforce un-american laws. there are very few "liberals" in office. most dems are also big-gov sheite. dems and repubs should be imprisoned for ruining our country. VOTE LIBERTARIAN!
