we all had to start some where , mine was using a mini mac to clear brush and cut up small downed trees on my fathers property , i didn't start falling trees till someone who knew how , showed me , i don't think falling trees around your house , boat and power lines is the place to start , study up , take in all the info you can , start away from your house with the smallest and easiest trees , perfect your cuts , hinge and saw technique , and then you still might want to let a pro fall the trees around your house and valuables , then you can buck them up and get some great experience , just be safe and have fun .

After you practice with the MS170, you could always rent a saw for a day.
It costs less then $50 to rent a 64cc Makita/Dolmar for a day from Home Depot.
That would give you a good idea of what a larger saw can do.

You can actually effectively cut 3x the working length of the bar with some different techniques. Not recommending it though.

I didn't see any 30" trees in sight in the video. Are you measuring circumference not diameter? Then the trees would be around 9-10" diameter, more in line with the woods I saw.

Kalispell, my. 90% of the trees are 12 inch diameter. The rest are pretty big, 24-30 inches. What are the techniques?

i don't think this is BA folks.
won't start, you need to back up and start over in your thinking. this is no joke, you can get killed. i don't really know where to start here.........at least you tried to make a face and hinge, thats good but your execution was way off.
you will need more saw but i'm not sure your ready for that. falling the other trees in that marm would have made it easier to fall the one you did first, a little deeper face would been advised, but only to fall it in the direction you did.
there is much you need to know if your dead set on this, more than i can type right now.

I don't know or care if this is BA or not. As a dealer I know I should not say this, but I will anyway. I love how these cheapskate, yuppie type clowns come into the store. They want a Stihl, but the cheapest p.o.s. possible. Any dealer worth his salt should have asked this guy a few simple questions, referring to his needs and experience. And then sold him the proper saw AND ppe, not the cheapest model available. Stihl does not build a saw in the 500.00 range that is big or bulky. You need to buy the proper saw and gear, and then learn how to start it/ use it properly and safely. Other wise hire someone who knows what he's doing, a not hurt yourself. A saw is like anything else, no matter what the brand, you get what you pay for. Being a cheapskate gets you nowhere, no matter what you are buying. Most of time trying to save a dollar, cost you two dollars.

OK, this is why I cut high. Two trees literally touching it that were in my way. I was trying to put face cut pointing away from house, but that direction was blocked by trees next to it more and more the lower you go. I added the rope, but it didn't work as planned. Bad angle and lost tension through the cut.

Keep the MS170 for small limbs. You're not a professional, and you do not need a pro saw, but you need a lot more than you have. I would get a MS290 or 390 for the big stuff.
