So yer wrong asking for it in decimals or fractions. Is that what yer sayin'?

Or, they're givin' us the wrong thing when we ask for 3/8 or .375?

I feel gypped. On a 62DL chain they are withholding .496". Think a class action suit is warranted?

On advice from Fish, I'll pay heed to any recommendation you may have.

Hey, I've made the mistake of calling it .375 and if the search function here worked at all, there would be evidence readily available.  I would also be able to find an attachment I'd recently placed on the server so as to not have to put this one up too.

Note the metric units for the various pitches listed in this attached page from a Stihl saw owners manual.

So you're saying that .404 pitch chain is the best buy cause you get the most mm/inch conversion? I have to ask, cause I just took some of the GOOD cough syrup and am a little fuzzy at this moment. BTW, I see that .325 pitch chain is a close second with 25.385mm/inch rounded up.

No, I'm not saying any of the bunch is the "best buy".  I just noted the 9.32 mm and saw that it converted to 0.367 in.  This took place in a thread here discussing 3/8 low profile and how the pitch was or was not the exact same as "regular" 3/8.  Some were saying that the lo-pro had a pitch of .370 vs. the .375 of standard chain, and I recalled having seen that page, thus used it to back my stance that all 3/8 was the same.  Anyway, that's when I discovered 3/8 does not equal 0.375, and confirmed it by measuring lengths of chain.

It rather makes sense to me, looking at it from my new vantage point.  The other major pitches in fact use decimals in their designation while the "3/8" is a nominal figure that's close enough and easily remembered/distinguished from the others.  Indeed, it's practically impossible to note the discrepancy when measuring only one basic pair of spaces.  I don't claim to have any official-type information as to why they didn't just use 0.375 inches, however.

I'm curious as to why they arrived at such a figure that doesn't seem to land on any decimal, fraction or regular metric target. There are some peculiar ways of naming and arriving at caliber designations for firearms too.

I simply thought the point would be driven home more authoritatively if even a stretched chain came up short.  It wasn't really meant to discover the actual pitch value; just that it was somewhat less than would casually be expected.

Glens, why would yuo use a well worn loop of chain for the measurements? Chains do get longer as they wear.
Wouldn't measurements from a new 100 foot reel yield the most accurate results?

Hi Mike,
100' roll of 3/8 chain has 1640 drive links. 100 x 12in.=1200 1200/1640=.732 .732/2=.366 pitch
If the 3/8 chain was really .375 then you would only get 1600 drive links in a 100' roll.
1200/1600=.750 .750/2=.375

100' roll of .404 chain has 1484 drive links
1200/1484= .808 .808/2=.404 pitch

100' roll of 1/2" chain has 1200 drive links
1200/1200= 1.0 1.0/2= .5 pitch
Happy Holidays

What's with quoting below the reply?  Rather backwards, isn't it?

The difference between 3/8" chain and .375" chain is nothing; neither one are made.

3/8 chain is 0.367" nominal pitch.

Semantics or not, it's fact.

That which we call 3/8" / by any other name, is still the same.
Good investigative work, by the way.
As for being backwards...I was born in a Mountain State and kept that state of mind.

3/8" chain is the nominal size, .0367 is the actual

Might as well get the semantics correct :umpkin:
Okay.

0.367" is the actual mean pitch and 3/8 is the nominal mean pitch.

I bought .375 chains for my McCulloch 38e, that had it listed as standard. I went to the local dealer to get a 3/8 chain at the dealer, but was informed that I had to by a new sprocket and bar then. Since the saw was 2 weeks old i did not, i went to the store and bought the chain listed for the saw.
Sold the saw before I used both chains up.

I think asking for either 3/8 or.375 will get you what you want. What will really screw you up is if you ask for some .367 chain.

Now we call it a donkey, but according to the bible it was an ass! Either way a bit stubborn!

I'd stick with what works and ask for "3/8 chain".  I'd bet 0.375 would put most counter-folk into a tailspin even if it were the correct dimension..

It wouldnt confuse them at Baileys Online. Their standard chain in both Oregon and woodsman pro is referred to as .375 not 3 / 8
