Well, I am not sure if i should be happy or a little pissed off. I will walk you through the scenario and then let you be the judge and i also have a couple questions.

Here goes.

4/19/09 - Purchase a Huskee 27 Ton log splitter w/Honda motor from TSC. I actually read a bunch of reviews on here and thought this would fit my needs very well as I do get into some bigger wood and I would like to split most of my wood for the OWB just for handling sake. I also thought, it is a wood splitter, I am going to get the Power Plus Protection plan.

Started using the splitter that day. Worked great. Used it for about and hour or so. I put up the splitter in the shed.

I went out about a day or two later and noticed a nice large (12+") round puddle of hyd oil. I thought, no big deal it is just new and probably seating in the seals.

I used the splitter, again great work. I put the splitter away in the same manor.

I went out about a week later and again another puddle of oil. Now I was concerned, but I thought I will use it again and see what is happening.

I used the splitter, again great work. (no performance issues) and put the splitter away as usual.

Checked it a day later and bang, more oil. At this point, I know something is wrong and I should talk to TSC to get some resolution.

5/17/09 I called TSC and described the issue. I was advised to bring the splitter back and they would exchange the splitter. I thought, great. The TSC employee informed me that they didn't have that model in the store, but they were expecting more in tomorrow. I was totally cool with that, as I am glad for the honesty.

5/24/09 I called TSC to make sure they had gotten their shipment of splitters and they had one so I could return my unit. They in fact had a splitter in the store so it would be no big issue. I hooked up the splitter and drove into town to exchange the unit. I got the employee at the customer service desk and he remembered talking with me and we went to perform the exchange and that is the 1st weird twist. He noticed the Power Plus Protection plan stapled to the original receipt and stopped my exchange right there. He stated that since i purchased the plan that the store couldn't do anything for me and I had to the call the 1-800 number to get assistance. I thought that was odd as I spoke to the store twice before and no mention had been made and it was within 30 days. I wasn't in the mood for arguing and said, alright, and went on my way.

5/25/09 Call the Power Plus Protection people to setup a claim. Very nice people to speak with. They processed my claim and informed me that since my purchase was large enough that they would come and pick up my splitter. I was like, good deal. Now the fun begins.

6/7/09 The claim had been paid by Power Plus Protection, but the shop that was working on my splitter (Sparks Service) hadn't returned my unit. I called the place on 3 different occasions to ask for an eta and got little to no response. I was told this day and never show, I was called 3 hours before they wanted to drop off the splitter. No way, I am letting them just drop the thing off without someone being there to receive it.

7/20/09 Yes, July. I get the splitter back. It is dropped off in my driveway. i grab the splitter and pull it into my main garage. I take a look at it and notice all the connections are teflon tapped. I thought, nice touch find the leak and also go the extra mile. Boy was I wrong.

7/21/09 I go to leave for work and guess what a puddle of oil on my garage floor leaking from the same spot as before. Now, i am just eating crow over being happy about going the extra mile. Now, I am pissed. I call Sparks and let them know what the deal is and get the answer. You need to call Power plus protection to set up another claim. I thought, WTF. You guys already processed the claim and it still leaks and i haven't even run the thing since you returned it.

So now I am hot, I have a pc of cardboard under the splitter just soaking up the hyd oil, not to mention it is almost out of fluid.

7/24/09 I setup another claim with Power Plus protection. I thought why not, give them a shot and see what happens. I called the PPP place each week to check the status and received 2 phone called today from Sparks. The 1st was to pick up the splitter and the 2nd was last week to tell me that they didn't have an eta for the part needed to fix my splitter. I called PPP and they told me they were handing the problem off to the warranty specialist, no idea some fancy task force bs. I then receive a call from PPP stating they are returning my full purchase price and to expect a check in the mail within 2 - 3 weeks.

10/6/09 - I call sparks and ask to come get my splitter and get, my manager is handling that and you need to speak to him. I thought, no big deal. I left my cell phone number.

10/7/09 - No call from sparks and I actually called sparks and left 1 message and then called back with no answer or return phone call.

I am thinking that I need to get my splitter back until the check gets here, if it ever does. I have a feeling that a sparks employee or acquaintance (no proof) has the splitter home since a claim has been processed and they don't want to take my calls. I am grateful to get my money reimbursed, but I am a little miffed that I have gotten no other explanation as to what the problem is/was or how it would be remedied in the future.

I guess my ##### should be with TSC. I just don't know how to justify getting another splitter from TSC, but the economics of another brand just to seem to fit my budget.

I know it was long winded, but what are your thoughts?

Sounds like a royal run around. Buyer protection plans normally kick in after the original warranty runs out. TSC should have handled the problem immediately. If no satisfaction is gained contact Speeco the original manufacturer.

One thing you never mentioned was the location of the leak.

The leak was at the base of the oil filter housing. I am not sure if the pc was cracked. The filter wasn't loose or the hose fittings.

Man this is a mess.. There is nothing that speeco can do at this point.. They would have been my first call. They likely would have shipped you the broken parts to your door.. That protection plan sounds like some bullhockey. And whoever Sparks is , Is at fault for not figuring out where the leak was coming from. I personally would never use teflon tape on anything hydraulic. I would use a pipe dope of some sort. How hard could it have been to figure out a leak on a hydraulic unit? Has what, 15 connections and a set of piston seals?

So now the OP has no check, and no splitter.. That's nice

I had just the opposite.

I purchased mine and when I pulled it towards the truck..I noticed just maybe a quarter sized dot of fluid..whoa buddy..this guy lays on the ground crawls around..told me to try it and see if it is just a break-in problem..so I got some of the biggest nastiest stuff I could find..worked great..but leaked..called and told the guy..same guy..he said he would order one today and just to run it like a rental.so I did..beat the crap out of that thing..never failed...about a week later I got a call.same guy again..that model isn't being made anymore and I can't get the new model for 2-3 weeks..they changed the design to a horizontal engine..ok got worried..he said to check back in a couple weeks if I didn't hear from him..I called and the gal there said they were due in the next week..same guy called me the next tuesday and said bring it in we got the new ones in..$300 price increase on the new model and he shook my hand and apologized for the inconvenience. never had an issue with the new one.

Sounds to me like TSC is good to go. It is the third party stuff where the trouble is. I am glad to see this thing discussed here, since i am a couple days away from getting a splitter at TSC and this has shown me to say no to the extra protection stuff.

:dizzy::dizzy:HOW are they!!! THE UNIT WASNT EVEN 30 DAYS OLD!!!PLUS HE PAID EXTRA FOR THE POWER PROTECTION PLUS!!!! THEY DIDNT EXPLAIN PPP TO HIM VERY GOOD OR AT ALL!!!!
Now he has NO splitter and NO check!! I'D be at that TSC kick'n some A:censored:S!!!

You're right. They did kind of shuck him on that deal. My comment was more toward all the comments about how quickly TSC made good on problems etc. I probably would have sprung for the extra protection on the assumption that it worked like Lowe's does. You buy something at Lowe's and get the plan, and all you do is bring the old thing in and they replace it with a new one. IMO, any time a third party gets involved, you're asking for trouble. They should have explained it better for sure, and the way it looks on that deal they should make it right.

Leiterch,

Just call Speeco. It's still under factory warranty and you'll be speaking with intelligent humans that will take care of the problem.

Ask for Carolyn.

TSC service can be a Joke, and those extended warrantys are scams.

At least you know which OPE shop to steer clear of now.

Double check the filter and line. It sounds like either a bad filter gasket or a loose hose if ya get a wild hair.

Stay safe!

this is why i never buy extended warranties or service plans.

just another monkey in the wrench.

sure glad i bought that American CLS splitter.no issues whatsoever.worth every penny for the piece of mind.

You should check out the Speeco 27 ton. I got mine from the local Ford tractor dealer. Paid $1200 out the door. Couldn't be happier!!!!:):):)

I hear all of ya. I would call speeco, but I am not sure how much that would help. I don't have the splitter in my possession (Sparks, and they still won't take or return my calls) and I don't have a check to buy a new one. I am just hoping that I get a check as it is supposed to snow next week and I bought the splitter early in the year to avoid the issue I struggled with last year. Shoveling 4+ feet of snow off the pile to get to wood. I am trying to stay calm, but I am getting a little more pissed as each day goes by and each phone call goes unanswered or returned.

I actually have no idea what I am going to do if/when that check shows up. I find it hard to give TSC more of my money, but I am not sure of another option in my price range/location. Damn this is frustrating.

I'll bet that Speeco would lean on Sparks and TSC some until you get satisfaction. I don't know if they could do anything to Sparks but they sure could to TSC. They have proved more than once that they want to keep a good reputation.

Leiterch,

Seriously. Call Speeco, ask for Carolyn. Explain everything to her including the whole down time and snow issue.

Both TSC and Sparks are under contract with Speeco, and I'll bet an ice cold Beer they would be MORE than interested in hearing about you getting the run around from two sloppy businesses that are trying to lose Speeco customers.

Based on the support and follow through I got from Speeco, and that others have had, I'd say you'll be splitting wood this weeked with either your splitter back and repaired, or a new splitter.

Holler at 'em already.... the snow is gonna fly sometime in the next week or so.

Stay safe!

Well, you gave it your best shot. Yeh, I woulda been smokin mad myself. Sad too say, I would have got my wife involved, true. She manage's a Kohl's store, knows all that legal crap, surprising, but she "Always" get's the issue resolved where I fail! Sucks, but i am grateful! Sometimes another approach is all it takes.

:agree2:

  1. Call them. They WILL take care of you.
  2. NEVER buy one of those protection plans. They are RARELY anything but a rip-off.

If you still aren't sure that TSC and Speeco will make it right, read about my bent toe plate. If nothing else, read my summary.

:agree2: Speedco is not bad to deal with and THEY WANT HAPPY customers!! I know what happen with the ppp at TSC, you at the check out and the person asks do you want the EXTENDED WARRANTY,1st year is MANUFACTURER,but you can BUY a 2yr for $$ or a 3yr for $$!!!! BUT what they didn't tell you is WHEN you buy it,THE PPP people handle EVERYTHING FROM THAT MOMENT ON!!!!...HOW do I know I used to work for them,WHY don't I still work for them??? I got tired of having to LIE to people and started telling people the TRUTH!!!

that is one thing about Speeco..............

everyone raves about their outstanding customer service.

i would take the advice of the previous posters and call Carolyn.what do you have to lose at this point? time to get some results!

i have quit buying from TSC.they are about par with Harbor Freight.just a Chinese clearing house these days.when i was a kid,the one in Lapeer Michigan was awesome! going there was a treat and an adventure. just like Tom's Hardware in Oxford Michigan.
