What caused this crack?

Ive seen perfectly sound tree do that only cause they were froze and hit wrong

It was like 12 below zero this morning but it wasn't the cold.

I agree it was probably frozen, I dropped a log last week but it didn't crack, and my mentor said I was lucky as they almost always shatter on him during the winter, but it's colder back in West Virginia, and he is from Canada (up until the past couple years). Even though there was squirrels living in it, I still say it was most likely frozen. That crack is much larger than the nest.
