XL-12 recoil issues

So I pulled this XL-12 out of the junk pile, it was locked up tight. I broke it loose and it’s been an awesome runner since.

The only issue I have is I’m constantly having to rewind the recoil. This thing just seems to shred pull ropes. I tie the knots the same way I’ve done any other recoil and I use no.5 rope

I know it has a huge snowblower handle on it, but that’s what I got it with. Anyone have any ideas?

What does the guide bushing look like. Can you pull the starter and take some inside views?

As far as I can tell it appears that nothings out of the ordinary compared to my other XL-12s.

The one thing I did notice is that the broken off segment of pull rope is completely mangled.

Has to be rubbing on something rough to shred like that. Not trying to be picky, but that doesn't look like an XL-12, never seen one with a padded front handle.

Gotta admit the guide looks good. Is the rope Stens True Blue double diamond solid braid or a nylon jacketed core rope?? Is it possible you have more than 32-36" of rope installed?
