Okay, we all know a vaccum test is a critical step in the rebuilding process...a bad seal can fry yer top-end...but most of us don't have the fancy factory jigs and fixtures for covering the exhaust and intake ports for the test...

Here's the lazy way...and there's nuthin' quicker!

There are special tapes made for waterproofing...the one i use is called "Eternabond", and it's made by the Vaproshield company (you can look 'em up on the internet, and find a local supplier or order on-line)

The tape is thick and super-sticky...it's a "peel and stick" with a special clear release liner. You cut small square sections for your ports, and just peel and stick them on...this stuff REALLY bonds well. Then just use the impulse line hooked up to your vacuum gauge to run yer test...the tape will easily hold.

Best of all...it will peel right off after the test, and not leave any residue...no mess to clean up at all...

Don't try this with duct tape, packing tape, masking tape, etc...IT WON'T WORK! Only these heavy waterproofing tapes will do the job. Plus you will probably find lots of other uses for this kinda tape...it's like duct tape on steroids...i have even fixed leaking pipes with it.

Here's a 200T under test...It fell 50 feet outta a tree...the seals were still good, but can't say the same for the handle, fuel tank, bushings, etc...

Thanks man nice post.Hey I keep a chicken line on my saw when up a tree do you guys?

Cover the port with a piece of tongue depresser or something stiff and then cover with duct tape I bet it'd work just fine. If not then I bet gorilla tape available at wal mart would do.

Gorilla tape will work but the surfaces have to be clean. If you don't leave it on there for a week it comes off pretty cleanly.

Looks like this stuff is even better, I will have to see if I can find some. How about shelf life for Eternabond, will the adhesive stay fresh in the roll for a couple of years?

The roll i have (the one in the pic) is years old already, and doesn't seem to have lost any of its adhesion. It's amazing tape...it will even stick well to concrete. Whatever you stick it to...and let it set for a couple of days...it's there forever. When it does take a set, it is nearly impossible to remove it...because it has a poly back sheet and the rest of it is all some kind of super-sticky layer of goo about 1/32" thick that almost melts into the surface and becomes bonded.

my bucket cover leaks, I tried duct tape and it didn't hold. Do you think this tape would work?
I think this Etherbond tape would..."fix a bad marriage"..!! LOL..!!

For $10 you can find out..!! I'd sure try it..!!

They use it to seal the roofs for those big camping RV's.

Watch the video at: Roof Leak Repair Products & Sealing Tape | EternaBond®
(video is on left side of the page)

It's supposed to last for years and years..!!
