Nice clean saws to work on, that's a fine thing ain't it?

First things first. Gotta find a place for some graffiti.

In the next two shots I wanted to show the stock transfer ports and how I mark them for cutting.

attachment.php

I clean the area to be marked with starting fluid and color it with a marker, then use the base gasket as a template.

This is pretty much the shape and size I'm staying with on the lowers. Here's the trying something different. I keep saying that hogging out the lowers does nothing on a work saw.....so I'm not cutting this 346 nearly as much as I have on several others I've done. I'm also trying a different shape on the cylinder walls in this area.

You can also see the stock uppers here.

If anyone is wondering about that finish it's from a diamond burr. A worn out one is much smoother and will be used for the final finish.

Here's a 346 jug I did a while back. I opened the cylinder walls and matched the transfer openings to the base gasket.

This is the one I did today. I removed much less material, and angled the walls

This shot is just for DC.....

It's ready to go back together. .030 popup, .020 squish.

Lot's of material came out of here. :D

Randy- looking good. I've never gotten too crazy on the transfers myself. I usually look at smoothing things out
and taking off the casting flaws. I use those "sanding fingers" to get a good finish in there.

Not much to do here. I just widen a reshape the intake port a little. After machine work the port timing ends up right where I like it on these saws.

After a trip through the ultrasonic cleaner to make sure all the clips are gone. Shiny ain't it??? :D

Unlimited coil...

I do not like these mesh air filters. :(

attachment.php

Right at 170 psi. That's great considering how much I raised the exhaust port.

The exhaust port opens at 103° with the transfers at 124°

I've changed my way of thinking on these little buggers more than once JJ. I hope I'm learning and not going backward.

back in the day thats what i did on the race bikes, nothing fancey just cleaned things up , . someday i'll sit down and start a little at a time and see what happens. good work randy keep meeting them saw's.

looks good randy :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:,,, don't worry about the filter,, i have a brand new felt filter waiting for her,,,,

Good clean work Randy.

Qurious? How do you hold your pistons in the lathe?

I center punch the piston and hold it against the chuck with a live center. The face of my chuck is flat and I can remove the jaws to give me a unobstructed area.

Randy did you get your comp tester from harbor freight?
I bought the same one, but haven't tested it out?

Yes good old Harbor Freight.

I've had good service from it for a couple of years. I did have to replace the schrader valve once though.

Before I got a Foredom I bought a knock off from Harbor Freight. It sounded rough as a cob the first time I pressed the foot pedal. I took it apart to find it full of trash from the manufacturing process and no lube at all on the flex shaft or sheath. The handpiece on it does get warm if you run it hard. It had plenty of power though, and for the price it's a fine tool.

The Foredom though, it's a Cadillac. :D

Dang it Randy I didn't get one of them stickers on my 346! :hmm3grin2orange: Looks great BTW

If you want one send me a PM. :msp_thumbup:

I'll try to put some fuel through it and make a video sometime today. My wife may have other plans.....so no promises. :hmm3grin2orange:

Very good looking work Randy. Please let us know if it runs mo better... Rep sent!

Thanks for the rep. You knew I was a rep Ho........Right??????

Lokin good Randy:cheers:

I'm gittin close to bein ready to take on some saw builds. So you'd better enjoy it while you can.:hmm3grin2orange:

Plenty of work to go around my friend. We stay real busy doing stock rebuilds. The port work is just a small part of what we do. Most of the time there's two of us working 6 days a week. :msp_thumbup:

Very nice pictures and excellent information for us guys in the learning stage.

You and all the others on this site are so willing to help others.
I am sure there are a lot of us setting back, keeping our mouths shut, in awl at the talent on this site

Thanks for sharing.

I've tried the mesh as well and the inside looks just like this. Feels a bit "grainy", not as fine as cinnamon but certainly dirt. Somehow it comes right through the mesh. And it's not leaking around the connection. Flock for me.

Good pics Randy!

Looks more like spit-back than dust that came trough the air filter to me? :msp_unsure:

I have never seen anything like that in one of those filter, and I have used a lot of them.....:msp_confused:

It may have been leaking at the seam, but that's dirt and/or dust. Not something I want to see in a saw.
