026 Repair Quote

I picked up an 026 today that won't start. Guy took it in for repair and got a $305.00 estimate plus tax. This is from the dealer. The prices of some parts seem way high compared to the dealers I go to.

Then 130.00 in labor to put this on. Theres nothing wrong with the muffler front, the air filter and fuel line seem fine. The guy asked if they were just trying to sell him a new saw and got no response. Does this seem out of line or is my dealer just cheaper?

Stihl parts are rather expensive. I'm not sure why you need a new cover. The tank vent can be cleaned. The fuel and impulse lines usually go on these.

I think he's going overboard on the parts myself.

That's just the shotgun approach to fixing a non-starting issue. None of those parts may fix the problem at all.
I would check the impulse line and spark. If those are good, I would put a carb kit in it. Even with an air leak, it will hit with the choke on, provided it's working.

Sounds about right for many dealers.
If you can do it yourself it looks like you could do it for under $50.
If saw has not run for a while it probably needs at least a fuel and vacuum hose, fuel filter and a carb rebuild.

I agree with somesawguy the Stihl parts are a little nuts up in the New England area. I dread having to get parts for the ms210 I had and the 026 I have.

The last time I check the dealer's labor was $70 an hour and they have a timeframe for how long each part should take to replace. Add that into your price

I'm tearing it apart on the sofa as we speak getting an evil eye from the wife. Fuel line was bad kinda like a rubber band. Diaphrams good and no crap in the screen. I think a fuel line, impulse line and an air filter will do it. It has good spark and compressions like new. The dealer didn't make out to good. The guy bought a $40 mac of craigslist. The spark screens missing on the muffler so maybe thats why the wanted to replace it. Its the good 4 hole cover.

I thought you said the fuel line was good in the first post?

looks like a TUNE UP to me and a expensive one at that... wont start ill pull the muffler and look at the piston,,no scoring step 2,,,good compression on to step 3....... ill pour some mix directly in the carb and if it starts ill replace the fuel lines,carb kit and plug clean the fuel and air filter, and sharpen the chain $10-20 for BOTH fuel lines,$10-15 for a carb kit,and $2 for a plug,,,,and for the grand total $50-70 depending on model and avaiability of parts never had one come back using this method ...i replace both fuel lines as cheap insurance that way i know the entire fuel system left her new and trouble free....until they leave mix in it for a year again:hmm3grin2orange:


sound like they are throwing parts at it to fix something that could be done easily with a little diagnosis...Would bet he was told he would be better off buying a new one oooh and another thing on these the flywheel crank seal likes to fail on these saws......

Those numbers don't add up.

I see about $140 in parts.

Labor is $165?

That is CRAZY.

I thought it was good. From the tank to carb looked good but when i pulled the filter off it wasn't too healthy.

We dont know what the technician did to come up with that quote.
You never mentioned what you paid the shop to diagnose/quote the repair on your saw........if it cost you nothing you should buy a lottery ticket and tell the girlfriend its steak and bj day!

In the real world all honesty, if some cat brings in saw to get looked at, I look at it, it gets vac/pressure tested, fuel lines, tank vent tested, comp checked, clutch measures, brake band measured, you name it it gets checked out 100%, every part of that saw needs to pass inspection, how long does it take........an hour to an hour and a half, just to inspect the saw, thats $75 to $115 in labour without even replacing a single part, add in parts and time to replace them, poof your at $300.

"It just needs a tune up, you know like a spark plug" and mr customer how much do you want to pay me to change that spark plug...........and when the new plug makes no difference then what..............??

Very seldomly do I pay anybody to work on my vehicles or my home, most everything is done myself, and those times when I need to hire out, I do not ##### about the cost, for they have mouths to feed also, and I am not doing the work.

I don't know what the check over cost. I bought it post check and am just going off the work order. It took from 10:18 to 10:35 for the checkover it says.

Bring the saw home, skip the shop repair. There are tons of threads here, and already some good advice in the post. The 026 is a great saw to begin learning to do your own repairs. (Was the saw missing the muffler front cover, the top cover, and is it possible the filter was missing or partially missing? the post does not say).

A few posts back there is a great process of elimination. Go through the steps and post back what the saw is doing, if you get it to fire and shortly run. Otherwise if it needs covers, you can post in the Swap meet thread your needs, or buy some on Fleabay. There are some nice aftermarket flocked air filters out there at a fraction of the cost you mentioned for the one quoted. And with a little search-savvy you could fix your own saw and maintain it for a lifetime. ~Happy Searching!~

Well take it on home, if they did anything it should be precisely documented on the work order....................you might get lucky and just need to add some fuel.

I'm not a Stihl head but have rebuilts a few 026's, feel free to pm me if your stuck with something, or need the shop manual.

Can I get a job there?
