K & N Filters

What do you guys think about the K & N's for saws? How does the oiled filter work on a chainsaw with the wooddust? One would think you'd be cleaning the filter all the time. The reason am asking is that is the same price to buy a K&N for a 372 as it is to get the original flock filter! Last of all - any real performance gains to be had this way?

I use the Holeshot system aka MaxFlow on the 044,You have to clean them more often and buy filter oil(no bar oil) I had to richenin it up a bit due to the higher Rpms it really breaths now.Never ran a K&N but I imagen they have similar airflow Seth

K&n's are great if you are looking to increase the amount of dirt entering your motor. K&N's flow more because they are less restictive, but they also restrict dirtless too.

All of the Cutter's Edge saws (630 II & 670 ) that we work on for the local FD's run the K&N filters on them. They seem to hold up pretty good under extreme temperatures and abuse. Only thing is that they run carbide chain for venting roofs and there isn't all that much dust as compared to cutting wood all day. Do you guys think this system would work on a Jonsered 830 with any benefits over the stock mesh filter?

Seth, off topic but worth mentioning, your smileys are great! Where do they come from?

The 'secret' on K&N filters acording to K&N is DON"T clean them often- the wood dust becomes part of the filtration system! I bought a used 268XP 6yrs ago. I cleaned the filter twice and replaced it once, Just put a new ring in that saw and the mechanic cleaned an reoiled the filter.

Otto I got this for 20 some bucks from Summit Racing equip.

You have to buy the "velocity stacK" also if you dont have one, but mine came with one since it was a Cutter's edge saw at one time

K&N Filters

Iwas cutting in a burn area in California, using 288 huskys with stock filters, or trying to, kept clogging up fast, swiched em out to K&N filters , solved my problem.

I don't think you could go wrong with a K&N. No way dirt could get past that cotton element when its cleaned and oiled properly. That is the key the oil helps trap every particle then you can just wash it out and reuse. They clean up very nice.

the guy who said that the dirt helps to filter is right. I have read about k&n's in carrol smith`s egineer to win, race to win, perpare to win, tune to win (all books about high performance car racing). he reccomends them strongly. from what I have heard most loggers don't regularly replace their filters anyways. if you need more proof that k&n's are where its at, they use them for the baja 1000.

Seth, My 830 has a mesh filter now, but I know what you mean about the velocity stack. It just so happens I have the beautiful parts breakdown for the Cutter's edge saw and will be ordering the stack early next week ala Jonsered. We used to run K&N filters on our Street Stock car, and it was amazing how much dirt it would trap!

That is correct. K&N's have poor first past filtartion effiancy when new and freshly oiled. As the filters poors clog filtarion ability increases. The question is why bother when the oem filters are better.

i think were all looking for maximum flow while keeping filtering capacity at a acceptable level.

OEM's may be better when new at filtering dirt, but they are not better at making HP. Also the K/N will flow more air when 75% clogged then a new paper filter, at least in K/N's automotive tests.

All I know is on mine I can hear the air being sucked in and it sounds great

Assuming that you rae increasing hp by bolting on a K&N is a bit speculative. I really doubt you would see a hp increase, but you will allow more dirt in. Why not try the max flow type foam filters?

I dont use my saw that much so the difference for me personally is negligable. It is also speculative that they let more dirt in. The hotsaw racers could answer this better. KD and the boys, whichdo you use. K/N style or max flow foam filters?

The K/N looks better so it must be faster
