Bought the splitter the last day of January and put it together , but it wouldn't start, it was below zero temps.
todays its 31 out so we starts it and it was splitting good until the
Hydraulic Line from the pump blew, looked like a garden hose on wide open. after a long clean up of hydraulic fluid we bought a new hydraulic line and fluid..... we did get some wood split .......

That sucks! Contact the company, they will make it right.

Hope your new fix works better! Cold and hydraulics can make things dicey sometimes. Good thing is, this company appears to be stand up guys, so we'll see what happens.

Were you injured in anyway? Perhaps you could retain one of those daytimes tv lawyers and sue them.
I blew a Seal once. . . couldn't get an errection without Viagra after that. . .lawyer get me a whole bunch of money... Dam Seal never looked at me the same after that.

no didn't get hurt.. when the line broke I was thinking to myself why is all that water spraying out.. after buying this just makes me want to build one myself even more. after I way out how I would make it better ....(1) I would make one with a better area to operate it..

Bad hose crimp? Take the hose to a good hydraulic shop and have a new one made.

Pumped dry?

Were you able to get the machine shut down before the reservoir went dry or the oil level dropped below the suction stainer inlet if there is one in the tank? It takes no time at all to damage a hydraulic pump when it doesn't receive sufficient oil at the inlet. If there is a silver lining, it's in how and where the line let go. Metal bits/chards created from running the pump with insufficient oil, probably didn't get downstream into the control valve or cylinder where they could raise heck with the seals and o-rings over time.

DHT seems to be be a responsive company based upon what I've seen in this forum so I would definitely get a claim / incident report including model and serial number with their customer service.

Take Care

Man that sucks, that whole exposed hydro. system looks ridiculously easy to damage. Looks like a longer hose that would make for a more gradual arc might help that outflow line not be so bent when the splitter is in horizontal mode and might ease the strain on that first crimp.

Some guarding and a bit of rework might be in order.

Fred, you are like me, just fix it and move on. I also wanted to build my own but the numbers just didn't add up. Better to start with something that works and improve it as you go. I bought the Speeco and last year cut it apart and moved the wedge to the foot, now it does what I want it to do and when something major on iot breaks I will sell it used and get another one and do the same thing. I don't have a problem buying cheap stuff that I can fix.

Yup, not a design flaw just a poor crimp by the looks of it. Sheet happens move on and get back to work. At work we have stuff happen all the time if we chased our tails around laying blame we would never get anything done. Learn from your experiences and keep gitting r dun.

If I just got done dropping a bunch of cash on a new splitter and the first time it got used it failed and puked a bunch of hyd. oil all over I wouldn't be rolling with the punches I'd be making somebody make it right.

This isn't a bunch of cash, it's enough but at the price point it isn't going to be 100% no matter what the salesman tells you. How much time would you waste on this? Then again I live 20 miles out in the sticks and nearest Home Depot and type store is 1 1/2 hours away. Not worth my time to drive back to get the story from the store flunky.
PS, I likely have the spare hose laying around anyway.

If I dropped $1,000 on a splitter and the first time I attempted to use it the thing wouldn't start then when I was able to get it running it blew a line I'd be justifiably pissed. This wasn't a used unit with some unknown history , it was a new piece of equipment that should perform accordingly.

Could I fix it, yep..would I fix it, nope.

Not starting in single digits is not a deal breaker in my opinion. Heck my homemade won't either. Hose breaking sucks, could have been worse if hot oil. I would be a little ticked off. I would guess that is done in house.

I'd still take back the blown hose next time you're in town. Keep the replacement as a spare .

Bad crimps suck and get frustrating real quick, had some custom length hose made up at a shop that obviously had a problem with either the fittings or hoses, this was for a backhoe I blew 4 out of the 6 lines they made for me three trips to there shop and they swore they haven't had this problem in like 10 years demanded my money back and went to the farm store bought prefabbed hoses for half the cost and no blown lines yet, getting showered in hydro fluid is no fun I feel your pain on this one, glad you got it fixed!
