    stihl 041 with 205lbs compression?

What does that drop to hot? I wonder if you will have a problem with detonation at that compression (In NZ we got rid of Leaded Gas a while ago) Regards Mark

    hard nose milling

Be careful how much you back it off though as too much and the chain will flop around both ends of the bar resulting in extra wear of the bar. On my 880 I found that when the chain was backed off the return (read top) chain was hitting the top mill bolt, I only noticed when it started getting...

    Puzzled

Doesn't sound too flash. The number of the degrees (180) implies a single or two cylinder engine with the piston hitting something at the top of the stroke (like the head, valves, a piece of the rings, or just the compression). Have you tried taking the spark plug(s) (asssuming this is a gas...

    Stihl FS220 Clearing Saw? Good/Bad/Ugly?

Great to hear you (and the FS220) are still alive! I did discover one other problem with the 220. There is a circlip at the bottom of the output shaft casting that holds everthing into the cutter head. The groove that this clip fits into wears (mostly from grass getting stuck between the...

    Stihl FS220 Clearing Saw? Good/Bad/Ugly?

Just in case anyone else is searching for information on the FS 220 and can't find it anywhere on this site I found what I was looking for (max no load RPM)elsewhere and can advise that this machine makes top power a little over 9000 rpm and max no load setting is 12,500. Regards Mark

    Stihl FS220 Clearing Saw? Good/Bad/Ugly?

yes I did, I just figured that if he went ahead and did the 220 up he should know that someone else out there has one (two!) and has the decency to let him know. Just in case he (or anyone else) can't find anyone else to answer his 220 questions - better to reply to an old post than to keep all...

    Stihl FS220 Clearing Saw? Good/Bad/Ugly?

HI Jack_Shaft Belated reply, I've got two of these saws and they must be getting on for 15 years old. I highly recomend them for the hammering they take and the reliabilty (we live a long way from the nearest shtil shop) the stihl shop is try in get me to upgrade but they just keep going (2000+...

    found another bullet milling

Whats wrong with copper? I just milled a short (about 4') walnut log (about 30" Dia) that was riddled with copper nails (quite big ones) the 880 Magnum/.404 chain just ate them:rock: . In some cuts there were up to 5 or six nails, the saw did not hesitate nor did we bother sharpening the chain...

    Milled with the 084!

I'm really glad this topic came up as I understand that another use for ash is in handles such as spades/shovels etc as it is lighter than hickory but v strong. I hope to mill an ash soon and having had a look around AS I didn't find anything on milling/drying ash for handles (long thin and...

1'st chain that got ruined on my mill

Why can't you just break the chain (grind off the rivet heads if you haven't got a breaker) and rejoin in the same number of links from that box of chain left over from the last loop you had made up, or worst case another shorter chain (using the brand new joining links that come with the roll)...

    361 spikes

Actually that roller catcher is a real pain in the a@#, it is true it does come off with the side cover but real care is needed to reinsert the pin on the other end of the roller before doing up the barmount nuts. If you have a big saw (880) with a 42' bar in a CSM this is not always as easy as...

Question about milling beetle kill trees

I've been milling some dry (been down for a couple of years) Cupressus Macrocarpa which is quite a durable species from North America. The only negatives I found with such dry timber was some splinters coming off the sapwood and alot of dry sawdust blowing everywhere. The heartwood was...

    MS 361 Review so far

    MS 361 Review so far

Don't stop at the King (660), monarchy went out of fashion ages ago...go the whole way and get a "mans" saw - 880 Magnum and know that the rest are bowing  to the real boss.:) PS the 018 is a perfect match for an 880, trimming off the small bits that get in the way, the 361 is the...

    milling fiddleback maple

Actually posting pictures is easier than you would think after reading the FAQs:confused: Step 1 First take the picture and save it somewhere on your PC where you can find it again (like the desktop). Make it small (say 50 - 100 Kb) so those on dial can see it. Step2 Later when you...

    404 to 3/8 chain conversion

Have you tried measuring the kerf on both (actual cut still in the log), How much difference is there in real life? I am interested as I have read other posts which suggest that it is very small (measured on the chain itself). So far the wood is plentiful and I'm not worried about the...

    404 to 3/8 chain conversion

I am interested why you chose (and others on AS recomend) 3/8 over 404?. I use 404 on my 880 Magnum and am wrapt with its indestructable strength when hitting foriegn objects such as nails and the fact there are less teeth to sharpen yet more tooth to give extra life:) The rooster tail of...
