    Stihl chainsaw i.d

What’s the difference between the 2? A couple cc of displacement? I worked on a 270 once & while it was fine, I do recall the parts being very specific to those 2 or 3 models. Nothing that interchanges from different families. That’s how I remember it anyway.

    Stihl ms460 magnum crankcase bearings

I Google an IPL for the saw & them search eBay for the part #s I need. Same will work at your local Stihl dealer. My dealer is very appreciative that I walk in with a list of Stihl part numbers rather than a vague notion of what I want. If memory serves, bearings have changed once or twice on...

    check the simple stuff (064)

That’s a big tear… are any of the A/V bushings sloppy? I had an all original 064 where none of the bushings were torn, but they were so sloppy/stretchy that it put excessive pressure on the boot. New bushings made it feel way better. I think I used aftermarket bushings and OEM intake boot iirc

    Post your dump/curb finds here!!

245 is the bigger (displacement and fuel tank height) version of the 306a. Piston and cylinders for a 245a are scarce but worth it if you can find them. Even though the saw is kinda heavy and VERY shaky (zero anti-vibe) by today's standards, it's very powerful. I really enjoyed mine when I...

    Stihl 041 Super

Very nice! I have a soft spot for 041's... that thumpy idle gets me every time. Make sure the carb is tight... they can develop air leaks around the intake with that (admittedly stupid) design with all the plates & gaskets.

    Fogging oil

I use it more for first-start on barn-find saws, etc. But a squirt of WD40 before a shot of carb cleaner likely accomplishes the same purpose. I'm with Harley... if I ran it, I know I used proper mix, and the cylinder walls are going to be coated. I bought a can of it 12-ish years ago and the...

Just when i thought I was cured of the dread full sickness084

Cool find like that deserves a full rebuild (you said "maybe" to bearings). Most importantly, we want a dedicated thread with lots of pics! :D

good compression for a 288 with 0.030" squish?

IIRC, My 288 fresh rebuild with a thin gasket put the squish at .22 (or .022 or wherever the decimal goes) and while I don't own a reliable compression tester, you gotta start it like you mean it, and my arm will pay the price if I don't go into it fully committed, LOL

    046 Tuning

Why a new top end? What cooked the old one? Crank seals are cheap insurance on a saw as old as an 046 (as are the intake boot and impulse line...)

028Super, kind of an odd running symptom.

Which carb is installed? If I recall (and my memory is foggy) the WT1 (or WAT 1 or whatever... it has a single digit number if I recall) is the better carb. Sounds like an air/fuel problem to me. What about the intake boot and/or impulse? I had one that acted really funny until I found a...

    Missed opportunity, Husqvarna 262xp

    Isn't a 257 just a 262 with a dished, low-compression piston? Or is that a 259? (or 261? geez it's been too long) Piston is a direct swap.

    10mm 044!!!

I also have a slant-fin 10mm 044 with a gasket delete. IIRC, it was ~.022. My 1st-year 046 D-jug was spot-on .020 with gasket delete. Those two both put my 064 to shame, btw. Easily my two favorite saws.

Old saws, anyone prefer running an elder workhorse? Show em if you run an oldie

Couple random ones from iPhoto. That 041 is my father-in-law's. He knew I was handy and asked me if I could fix it. I'd never worked on anything 2-stroke before; only mowers and the like. Had no spark (SEM coil); I googled for info and found Arboristsite. Now have 30+ saws. It's his fault...

Stihl 044 fuel tank/rear handle replacement parts

Sounds like maybe he's more suited to using a plastic Poulan.

    Stihl 028 Super Oiler

Do what Harley said. If it's not oiling, take the metal bar plate off, then the plastic cover. Take a pic of how the gears go together and be wary of googling images as there were a couple different setups if I recall correctly. The pump is driven from the gear, sucks from the tank and pushes...

Stihl 044 fuel tank/rear handle replacement parts

I also have never seen nor heard of an 1128 series with anything other than plastic tank. I *think* any tank/handle assembly from an 044/046/440/460 will work. It's an easy swap. Cheap insurance would be to replace the impulse line (OEM please; probably $10) and if the A/V mounts are squishy...

    Today’s Stihl saw find

I have 2 runners--one top handle (more sought-after like yours) and one rear handle. Fun, snotty little saws. You're gonna love it. Watchouts: the carb boot can crack and be a PITA to align with the outer "shell" or whatever. (You'll see what I mean), and take some pics of the carb linkage...

MS460..stock bore, big bore or popup?

Another vote for saving OEM jug + using Meteor piston. I've done it with a Dremel plus hand (2fingers) sanding with wet/dry paper & WD40. Doesn't have to be high tech and it's really rewarding to save the OEM part. My $0.02

    Your favourite rebuilding tool?

The small Stihl flathead screwdrivers intended for carb adjustments. I find myself using as a substitute for a pick tool. Kinda like a pick with more surface area. I also occasionally adjust a carb with 'em, too. Other honorable mentions: forceps (or heliostats or whatever), an old but...
