Is this a Red Oak, and could I transplant it successfully?

I moved an American elm in July here in Texas, but the clay soil made it easy to get a large root ball. It was 4' across and about 2' deep. Even during the heat of the summer a weekly watering was all it needed. Ropensaddle is right, it is a LOT of work and will take a large chunk of your time...

    Alaskan mill winch lifting mill

I have no personal experience with a Wich yet, but I believe winch placement makes a big difference. the thicker the slab your cutting, the worse the tipping would be if the winch is attached to the top of the mill. preferably it would pull in the same place as the bar and chain...

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

Nice end table. I love the rays in that quarter sawn oak. Are they just as visible from other angles? When I get them in a pice they seem to come and go depending on light and viewing angle.

    Echo CS-2511T, CS-271T or CS-355T

The cs-2511t gets my vote. But also get an old used lineman's climbing belt and make yourself a flipline and and a couple friction hitches. You go up the ladder put your flip line around the tree, and another rope choking the tree down around your knees in case you cut your flip line. Now you...

    Husqvarna 450 x-torq

I think the 450 is a good home owner saw and $130 is a fair price if it's in good shape, but I would never pick it up over a pro saw, even if it's an older 026. Although I do keep one home owner saw (455 rancher) for when friends and family come asking to borrow one of my saws.

    Stump burl

Whatever you do, don't let it get burned or sit there and rot. If I were trying to sell it I would probably cut it up into pieces that fit into flat rate shipping boxes and sell on eBay. It may not technically be worth as much in pieces, but it sure is easier to sell that way. Large enough for...

My first time milling. Large oak.

I removed a large post oak tree this past weekend, it had a 36" diameter trunk about 17' long. I've got it in two lengths ready to mill. I've never milled before. I have a 395xp and ordered a Alaskan mill and 42" bar with two chains. I have read threw the tips and tricks page, but am still...

    Houston , Texas.

Ive personally been down to Houston, Corpus Christi, and Rockport for volunteer work. I did not see a single down tree while in Houston. Corpus Christi and Rockport will have lots of tree work for a while though.

    Climbing in Poison ivy???

Thanks for the replies! I did not consider that the oil could get on my saws and ropes and then transfer back to me later. unfortunately they "have to have" the trees out by the end of the month, so I cant cut the vines and let them sit or wait for winter. I will make sure to bid them HIGH! I...

    Climbing in Poison ivy???

I have a large job to bid in the next couple days. It includes a china berry and a hack berry both about 50 ft tall and right in between two metal buildings. They would be fun trees except they are completely covered in poison ivy! they have several 2" vines growing up the trunks and almost...

    Safety in cottonwood

I ended up using two tie ins. One was a good 12" but it was low. Then I had a nice one higher up that was a crotch with 6" leads. It ended up being plenty strong, although after seeing Thoes branches explode I won't be using anything smaller than that on future cotton woods. Especially when they...

    Safety in cottonwood

Thanks for the tip, I used a cheapo carbiner from harbor freight in place of the washers and that worked well. You guys were not kidding about these things exploding! It was like a firework show. Thanks for all the tips I felt like I was able to stay safe.

    Safety in cottonwood

Thanks for the tips! That makes me feel a little better as else where I've read to never tie into anything under 10". I think the best tie in is a crotch (circled in red (pic is lower quality than original posted above)) with about 6" branches, which look strong to me. With that tie in I should...

    Safety in cottonwood

It is green. It does show some signs of distress, the bark was damaged at the base which I think is finally catching up to it. Being winter its hard to tell the actual condition but I believe it is still very green. Thanks for the reply Hapazard404, I guess my main reason for asking, is the...

    Safety in cottonwood

I have been climbing for a few years now. Here in south Texas I mostly get hardwoods and the occasional pine. I have several cotton wood trees coming up, and have no experience with them. I'm removing the smallest on Wednesday (see pics). It is showing signs of distress but appears to be solid...
