I have heard of guys using used motor oil that they have run through a fine filter and then added a pint of STP per gallon for anti-wear and tackyness. They claim it works as good as the virgin bar oil, but a lot cheaper. Personally I run Stihl bar oil.
I have both a MS260 and the MS361 and dads old 031av which is still in good shape. You can't go wrong with any of the pro saws, light weight, good power, well constructed. I run 3/8 x .050" chains on all my saws for interchangeability.
I don't see anything wrong with two smaller saws, it just depends on how much time you want to spend cutting. My dad had two saws all the time I cut with him, a couple of Skil saws that we never could keep running and then a Stihl 017 and the 031av I still have and it still runs. Sounds like...
The picture makes it look like it has seen little use. All metal is a plus, price is OK in my book. I'd take a road trip and bring it home if it looks good and runs good in person.
I used to cut hedge with my dad when I was a young man, we would cut it out of the bulldosed piles the county piled up. Often it had set too long and dried out some and got hard! If your chain wasn't good and sharp it seemed to slide over it and not cut a chip out, you really had to put some...
I agree, if the cylinder and the rest of the saw is in good shape and you can get it resonable, why not re-ring it? My bother-in-law loves his 028 super!
Many years ago I got a pamphlet from Champion Spark Plug company that taught me how to read a sparkplug. It was very informative and had pictures along with verbage, I still have it somewhere. This dealt with four cycle car engines used in racing but most all of it still applies to high...
One saw plan: MS361 with the muffler moded and two bars 16" and 24". Two saw plan: MS 260 pro muffler moded and either the muffler moded MS 361 or a Husky 372xpw. I kept it Stihl and can share rim sprockets, chains, and bars. Three saw plan: add a top handle saw to the two saw plan. Just my...
I think it is too bad that John Deere is getting into other types of products like Stihl Chainsaws and Gun Safes. You would think that farm equipment would be enough. We need the good mom and pops outdoor lawn care stores, they don't need to be run out of business by the greedy big boys. The...
You must of got the wrong stuff, the dye I use mixes very well with oil, or gasoline. I use 10 to 12 drops to the pint of oil and it turns my fuel mix a nice blue, no problems mixing, it is almost instantainous, just a couple of shakes and it's done! It is petro based dye, I don't know why...
I use a qt. mix bottle I got from the boating section at Walmart to mix my mower and saw gas. They no longer carry the bottle but I am sure that any boating store would have one. I pour in oil, stabil then add some fuel from my fuel jug and mix it in the bottle and then pour it back in the...
I am with Bowtie, he has given you good logical advise. However if you just want an excuse to buy a new saw, you can't go wrong with either a MS260 or a MS361. The muffler mods to either saw I am told are worth the trouble as long as the extra noise is not a problem for you or your neighbors...
Truss building lumber yards use a computer program to design and spec materail for their trusses. The lumber used is most likely spec'd out at a certain minimum tensil strength for the truss to carry the load it was designed for. Most truss building lumber comes from old growth Canadian...
The newer Mobil One Racing 2 T in the quart bottles has red dye in it. I bought a lot of MX2T (same oil) in pint bottles at Autozone for a $1 each and it did not have dye in it, so I got some liquid candle makers dye at Michaels and made it blue (10 to 12 drops per pint). Amsoil Saber at 50 to...
I have a Honda EU2000I and I love it for the same reasons you do. It is a gem and has made life better during our week long power outages from Ice storms here in Kansas.
I have some farm store bar oil that came in quart bottles like gear oil, the spout makes it easy to squirt it into the oil tank. I just refill the quart bottles from my Stihl gallon jugs. Works for me.
How many years do you think it was in the ground? The plastic the bottle is made of will spring a leak before the oil goes bad, ask my how I know! Good luck!
A saw is a long term investment, spend the extra bucks and enjoy one of the finest saws in its class! When you amortize it out the MS260 Pro doesn't cost that much more per year. I like mine!
