    Any of you guys

Yeah, you have a point there. I definitely had good preparation from the likes of Randall Swanson, Harry Pearsall, Dennis Ryan, Tom Houston, and Jack Ahern. You're really did well I think if you scored in the 70th percentile range on the exam. I commend you for that, considering the lack of...

Great post for those new to climbing, especially the above in bold print.

    Any of you guys

Piece of cake when I took it back in '93, except maybe for the oral exam part. Aced Jack Ahern's tree ID slide show. Not to brag, but I was the first one out of there! :) http://www.stevedaniels.com/index/Credentials.html BTW, it is STILL the hardest American arb test out there, hands...

    what I been up to

Looking good, Bigjohn. My grandfather was a blacksmith shoeing those kind of horses, especially at Vernon and Saratoga. Good to see you at your new gig. Don't forget you and Murph are da bomb at tree woik. You can't ever escape it, no matter how hard you try, it's in your blood.

    drunks and gypsies????

I'm not sure where you get the idea pruning is for the weak, compared to takedowns. I'm certainly not saying a big cottonwood takedown is a walk in the park, but climbing spurless to a top of a big tree and working your way down pruning either by climbing out to the tips or by using a polesaw I...

    Death in a tree Family

People have said about posting on message boards that it’s just cyberspace, nothing is “real.” Let me tell you it’s real and Mike is real … … and Mike you have a lot of friends here and elsewhere who are real. Anything we can do for support I hope you know we’re here. -Steve

My best wishes for Mr. Hill. I dearly hope he'll recover to climb again.

    Lake effect snow

No, but I did work for a company (AAK) that moved furniture for Dunk & Bright (house deliveries in a straight truck). Pat Bright is the owner, and a good person to work for. I was referring to when I hauled for Penfield Manufacturing in Syracuse, which just recently went out of business. They...

to kill, or not to kill

Well, if the soils are very poorly drained, and if the prevailing winds blow from the tree to the house, I'd agree. Spruces are very shallow rooted, and if the soils are clayey, the soil may become saturated, and a good hard rain with moderately strong winds could possibly uproot the tree. I've...

to kill, or not to kill

What's the texture of the soils under the tree? Clayey, silty, sandy? Some combination thereof?

What is your favorite tree or trees ?

I love the foliage of the Sourwood, it's an outstanding tree. Unfortunately, our limestone soils here in central New York are too alkaline for it. But I found and planted in my yard the next best thing -- a Persian Parrotia. Similarly red/yellow/red leaves, but tolerant to a wide pH range.

If you've ever been to the Arnold Arboretum, you'll know what OTG Boston's talking about.

    Lake effect snow

Heard that. When I was a "bedbug" out of Syracuse hauling furniture & bedding, on Tuesdays I had the north country run. This old codger in Lowville invariably would order a night stand or a bedding set, which meant every week I had to run Rt. 177 from Adams Center to Lowville right through...

    smoking climbers?

Another rhetorical question, Adam? Anyway, the answer is TESTOSTERONE. An extremely dangerous and potentially lethal chemical compound, especially when administered in large doses. However, ironically, this highly dangerous drug is responsible for the survival of the human species, without...

What kind of tree was it?

You had to ask, because now I can't find my old Bradford Angier books or my precious Euell Gibbons's "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" book! But somewhere in one or more of the above books is mention made of tapping White Birch trees to be boiled into syrup. So unfortunately I now have to turn...
