Chain/bar problem

I have a 12 year old Stihl ms260. I adjust the chain to the bar and within minutes of cutting the chain tightens up to the bar not allowing it to run properly. I took it apart, cleaned it, tried half a dozen times to adjust the chain but the same aforementioned thing continue . Ideas?

Also, run the saw a little with no bar/chain/cover, and look at the oil flow.

Will do, this weekend. Also I ran it for 4 hours yesterday with no issues. Went to run it today and the chain was so loose I almost crapped my pants

Worn out drive sprockets on the clutch drum can cause these symptoms as well as lack of oil to the bar and chain, you will have to do some looking on your end and let us know what you found.

I don't know what a healthy drum sprocket looks like but those bits of metal next to the screwdriver can't be a good sign. Also the oil seemed to flow fine.

That looks like your needle bearing is shot Jeff .

Nope, he wants to see rim gear, part that fits on drum and drives chain. You need a new drum bearing and if the drum is loose with new bearing, replace drum also. Steve has it right, that bearing is shot. Also is inside of drum and clutch faces flat, or ridges in them, or wavy?

I have a feeling that his rim has broken too fell on the ground without him knowing it.

Agreed the drive links are toast. New Drum/rim/bearing and chain, I wouldn't even try to save any of it.

On another note has anyone tried the Stens Rim/Drum setups? I have an 036 that never got the conversion to the larger bearing and was wondering if the Stens is holding up, big difference between nearly $50 for Stihl and $18 for Stens. I haven't looked up the part number for Oregon to see what it would cost to go to their Rim/Drum and Bearing.
