I just picked up a Stihl Farmboss 18inch, from a yard sale for $100 the guy said it was 3 years old. The saw starts on the second pull but will not idle, it seems to run fine other than that.

Unless you're compensating for the saw having had an idiot for its former owner...

Well, with a saw that is only suppose to be three years old, I wouldn't be in a rush to suspect the rubber hose right away, anyway. I have worked on saws that were still running good with original rubber even after ten years service, including my own. I think it will all depend on how it was taken care of with the previous owner. I take very good care of my saws, much like everyone else on this site. But the general public does not, probably including the guy you bought the saw from. You will probably never know for sure, but there are ways to get an idea.

Does it looked weathered (like it was stored outside or in a bed of a truck)? Is the plastic in good condition, beat up, or faded? Does it looked like it has never been cleaned, or maybe it's been cleaned regularly? What is the age of the gas in the fuel tank? Any foul odor maybe indicating bad gas, possibly varnish? Is the spark plug fouled, maybe it's the original or maybe a new one.

Give it a really good cleaning and inspect the hoses as others have suggested. Replace the spark plug with a new Bosch plug (WSR6F). Pull the carb out and clean it inside and out, that will give you a good idea if it is all clogged up with junk or varnish (search the forum, many posts on how to clean a carb). After cleaning, reset the needles valves back to the original settings. Replace the fuel filter and put fresh mix in it.

If that hasn't improved how it runs, then maybe seek the help off the dealer. There are lots of things that you can do yourself, all with the help of this site.

Good luck.

I know a lot of people like to play with the adj screws ans have no idea what they are doing. The saw runs but I want it running right. Does anyone know what the proper H L adjustments are? I hope to get up there this fri and check the hoses. I have a 20" bar for this saw, it is an ES , I am going to try to trade for a blade or something.

What is a leash???

The carb adjustments are printed on the side of the filter box. For a three year old saw - that means it has limiter caps, so it's likely 1/4 turn CCW (from seated CW) for the L, and 3/4 for the H. The LA screw is just wound in until the throttle plate just moves, then it's a fine adjustment for correct idle speed after the L is set.

Those are rough settings that will work at sea level. If you are over 3-4000 feet, they will be leaner (slightly less than 1/4 and 3/4).

Search AS for carb tuning. There are thousands of posts....

I intend on giving a good cleaning this weekend and thanks for the adjustments. If I run out of time I will bring it home.

Genius, pure genius.

Peter hails from the land of Husky snobs... actually, he's the only one ;), but.... For three years he's been unable to understand why anyone in their riight mind would buy an 029/290,,, but still they sell...

Oh... He's saying your saw is a dog, so take it for a walk (on a leash)...

Looking at the cracks in the fuel hose takes 5 seconds to do, and the best part, it is free to look. Then one would know..............

But who am I to say?

Do you all remember me talking about one of my old fat girlfriends???

When you get back upstate, p.m. me the serial numbers right beside the
muffler, and I will tell you exactly how old it is. Also give me all off the
numbers and letters on your bar and chain you were mentioning, and I
will tell you what they are and fit as well.

Here's a tip for loving really large fat girls, Throw flour at the "hard to locate region" of interest, start flipping through the pages until you find the wet spot if it smells like sh*t flip one page back.:greenchainsaw:
