Both make close to the same power. The 390 gets close to the 361's price so kick up a few more $$$ and go with the 361. Oh yeah, the 390 is a mid range saw where the 361 is a pro.

If you want to go cheaper, buy him a 039/390 top end for the 029 and give it a muffler mod.:chainsaw:

Just throwing out a idea. How about the new MS 290 Farm Boss? He is not cutting down monsters in PNW. We mostly cut pinion pine for fire wood in 18" plus range. We do cut at high altitude (8000 to 9000 ft) if that matters.

It's not any different from his 029, 'cept for the oil/fuel caps. If his 029 is tired(maybe low compression) then a new 290 might seem like a step up but they are the basically the same saw. A 029/290 is fine for 20" wood, any more and you will want more power.

I had a 310 , the 361 will maintain better power at altitude then the mid-range saws, that was something could really tell a differance in.

361's just breath better if you muff-mod it for him, and I am sure he would like the anti-vibe.

I just bought a ms290 farm boss and have been hacking up 28 inch locust trees without a pucker. do have to say an oak tree gave it a bit of a tussle, but it seemed that where ever I went it was a knothole.

Dream well

I am looking to get my father a new saw(He is a stihl guy). I have narrowed it down to a ms-390 or ms-361. He has a farm boss 029 and cuts about 12 to 16 cords of wood per year. So tell me what you think and please stay on topic.

THANKS :givebeer:

Not Me... But I think he is from Illinois and has a muslim last name... Hmmm? :monkey:
