I have a chance to buy a 046 for $250, and was wondering how bad of shape does it have to be in to not buy it.

Seller says that it runs good, and has nothing missing/no broken parts.

I would buy it if it was just a scored piston with clean everything else. I recently bought a 044 with a scored piston. the rest was real clean so I gave him $200 and walked away. (the seller was a tree service man, he wasn't going to budge any lower, he wanted $250). Took it all apart, cleaned, acid the jug and throw in a piston and cranked right up. the clutch springs were worn but no big deal. The total cost about $260 hard to beat.

The crank and bearings must be in good shape and the saw complete. Cosmetics do not matter at that price. A scored P&C would be acceptible. I'd take it with deteriorated rubber parts as well, ie intake elbow, fuel line, impulse hose.

The saw is about a 2 hour drive from my house. The seller doesn't have pictures but he said that he has wood and that i can test the saw out. I just don't know if it is worth the drive.

He just sold one NIB for $600

assuming the wood isn't 2x1 battons (small...) that sounds pretty good. I reckon that deal (I'm hanging out for a 460 and would JUMP on it) is worth the drive. If it's gutless in the cut, you've wasted the trip - if that won't kill you sounds good.

Nothing missing or broken, starts and runs good. (His answers)

I don't need this saw and was thinking about cleaning it up and putting it on e-bay.

I forgot that a buddy of mine was coming down on Tuesday of next week and
he only lives about 5 min from the saw so I told him to go and use it and if it ran decent too buy it.

I will tell you how it turns out next week.

Got the saw today.

First: it wasn't an 046 but a MS460.
Second: it had a .404 pitch rim on it with a 18 inch 3/8 bar and chain (idiot).
Third: it is only 2 years old, jug and slug look like new through exhaust port.

I haven't had a chance to run the saw in wood yet but I may just keep this saw for myself. which means new 3 saw plan

371XP, MS460, Dolmar 9010

One question is there a MS460 and a MS460 Magnum?

All I have heard of is magnums - guess that designation was inherited from the late (improved) 046s - but then there is the dual port muffler - so I might be wrong.....

I'll get pics in a few days. The saw was dirty and I didn't take pics before I cleaned it. I still have some work to do on the bar.

Just a quick rant but I hate those laminated Stihl e bars.

If I do keep this saw what bar length would you who have 460s recommend keeping in mind that the 371xp has 20 and 24s, and the Dolmar 9010 has 24 and 32.

I am thinking 28 but don't know how well a stock 460 would pull it in hardwood.

You can get the "magnum" sticker from your dealer. Prolly fell off or something. I have a couple 046/460"s and with a muffler mod and retuned they pull a full comp chain on a 28" bar no problem.

Oh, great find by the way.

Leave it to math, and try this...

CC's divided by 2.8--

56cc/2.8 = 20"

77cc/2.8 = 27.5 (so 28")

79cc/2.8 = 28.2 (so 28")

52cc/2.8 = 18.5 (so 18")

Etcetera, etcetera, etc.
