Bucking spikes

Doug I have those dawgs on a stihl but they are probably similar. They reduce usable bar length by about 2 inches, but they will bite into most rough or shaggy types of bark. What type of wood will you be cutting? John

I have them for my MS460 but only use them when I'm cutting a lot of big yellow pine. I have large stihl dogs on my 066 and use them for every thing.
They're a mixed blessing. Half the time they're in the way and are just dead weight. I reckon I lose about an inch of cut length with them (the large stock ones) on my 066.
Do you regularly slam your muffler or oil tank into the (uneven, gnarly) log when the chain gets a healthy, sudden bite? Do you often find that you could use longer spikes for lateral leverage when felling or stump cutting? If so, then by all means, get ya some! As I recall, the 372 comes with a nice pair of medium-sized dawgs which I'd think would be a very good all-around compromise.

I wish my 7900 had a pair of the Stihl medium sized dogs on it like my 440 did. The stock Dolmar dogs blow IMO.
Glens, if you want to use slightly smaller dogs the ones in this pic will fit. They are lighter and shorter than the massive 066 pieces.

Ben, If you look on the Dolmar website you can find the parts list for the 7900 in pdf form. On that list is a part number for more conventional looking dogs, I just don't know if they can be ordered in the U.S.

The stock 372 dogs are way too small for our conifer bark. But I use them cause I like to save weight and bar length. A friend welded on a slightly larger point at the bottom, making them nice. I need do the same.

Hey Roger, using your little screamer today( I laughed like a madman on my removals) I realized that if the dog on that saw was a tiny bit longer the muffl34er would'nt get choked and also get a little more bite for walking the cut, maybe Dozer Dan can cut me a little bigger one while he's doing mine.

I think those larger dogs would help with felling too. My 066 has the large dogs on it, buti want to build a set of the "west coast" style dogs for it. If i ever get them done, i will post pics and results.

I put the large spikes on my 046. They are far from necessary for the trees around here, but I like them. I feel like I have better control with them than with the smaller ones, and its easier to see the cut. Also, the few times I use the 28" bar, they keep the saw sitting up right when I set it down.
