Back in the saw game after a hiatus, I took a look at eBay for some old saws to bring home. Hardly any to be found, at least compared to when I was looking all the time back in 2007. What happened?

Just what I see...
The market seemed to get flooded very late last year and earlier this spring. The prices were holding in what I considered the higher range. Then along came summer and people got busy and funds got tight. Lots of sellers holding on to stuff, waiting for those high prices to return, is what we are seeing now. I think after Thanksgiving in the U.S., you'll see a mini flood of older stuff as people look for a little extra cash for Christmas. Just my thoughts, I'm no fortune teller lol

Take a look in the woods around here.
Guys with old saws and outta work are either taking 'em out and cutting for wood to sell, or to the pawn shops for cash.
Guys low on cash and needing saws, are buying up old saws at the Pawn shops.
It's kinda nuts, but for 100 bucks you can get a good old saw that will run forever, or a wildthingy, and those inclined to use a saw have a clear choice.
Stop into the pawn shops and leave you card, and tell 'em to call if they get anything good in, and before the dump it on fleabay.

A lot of folks keeping what they have these days. The general tour of servicing shops has been a walk through history this year as folks are willing to spend more on the old saw instead of spending even more to buy a new one.

Back in the 70's, I bought my first chain saw, a Husky L 65, 64 cc I believe, a real workhorse that I used hard for many years. Of course, I had to buy smaller saws in the 30 - 40cc range for cutting up limbs, but none of them outlasted the this first Husky of mine until I made the mistake a couple years ago of loaning it out. It came back still running but whipped, and had lost some compression. Call me a wierdo, but I had grown very fond of that saw, it had a history that went back years, lots of trees, lots of memories. Not easy to find new pistons and jugs for the L65. I went on ebay and found one that had been rebuilt and had great compression. I bought it and another L65 basket case, so I've got lots of spare parts and one really good running L65. I don't really need this saw, it's heavy, I use other more late model big Huskies and a Stihl 075 for milling, the usual bunch of smaller saws, but somehow I'm only sentimental about this L65 and I like to run it. Ebay always alerts me when there's one for sale. Lot's of 'em still out there and still working just like mine is. Here's one to be thankful for, ebay!

I hear ya. Maybe it's also the increased eBay listing fees that are driving folks away. You used to be able to get a decent older saw - XL12, 10-10, 306 - for $60 to your door.
I've been surprised by how few oldies I've seen on CL or at the pawn shop this year. Usually see tons as folks take their summertime garage sale finds and flip them during firewood season.
At the moment I'm looking for a functional Remington PL-5 and a Homelite XL/SXL series powerhead with auto oiler. Not looking for project saws at the moment, hoping for something that is ready-to-work without spending a fortune...

An XL/SXL in good functional shape will pull at least a $100.00 here.
Any running saw of that size is going to get at least $100.00+.
Weird year for collecting around here, slooooooooow. This has been the slowest year since I started. Even getting new parts the game has changed a lot.

I'll make the rounds and see if there's anything decent getting dumped.
There might be a few coming in for trades for Christmas, and now that folks are buying wood again.

Knowing you JJ it's more like a few dozen.
REALLY old saw still are in service at this farm....especially those old Homie's.

I've decided to boil down to old red saws. All the yellow and silver etc are finding homes with other nut cases like me. Hopefully they are in homes that give them a chance to make some noise..

there are a few black holes of old saws .. . oregan there is a gent with quite a few old saws.. amboy washinton . has a super massive black hole sucking up saw from thousands of miles away . there is another in norway . think he is an admin on another site... small black hole in north louisiana . only bout 60 in that shop ..
but honestly there has been a recent spike in people lookin for the old fixer uppers instead of a new saw for 500 they spend 100 on one needin a lil work ..

My Dad lives about 20 miles from you and bought me this John Deere badged PL-5 for $25.00. Cleaned up it runs great. I'm sure there's a lot more in your area.

I've got a pair of homelite 1050's my Dad bought new in 72 and 73. A lot of sentimental value. I bet over 20 years of service each one of those saw made him a million bucks. I'm working on one now and the other's cylinder is slightly scored, so I'm gonna look into having it chromed. A few years back I got a bug up my but and sold all of our old saws but the 1050's. About 20 saws, mostly EZ's and XL12's and Super 12's. I wish I had them all back. A few months back a friend was cleaning their garage and found an old blue Super 12 and gave it to me, it's running. I also have Dad's old Disston, but I'm in no hurry to restore it. It just looks neat. Good luck on your serch, Joe.

The other factor here is time itself. Each year as people replace their oldies with new saws, many of the saws that are being replaced are sadly just being tossed out. So little by little, there are simply fewer old saws out there. Unlike most of us, the average guy just thinks of an old saw as a piece of junk. Not much different than you might think of a 30 year old Murray push mower. Sometimes I tell a customer to bring me in his old saw and he's shocked that it might have any value to anyone at all.
The average guy also lacks the ability that most of us have to fuss with the saw a little bit to keep it working reliably. If it gives them any grief, they want to get a new one. Not only that, but most shops don't want to work on the old stuff anymore either. I'll only do it for people I know.
