Dont know if this question has already been asked,so I'll ask it again.

How much wood will you guys burn in a winters heating season.
With my Free Standing stove I would burn around 10 Face cords a season
With my OWB I'll burn around 21-22 face cords .I heating twice as much so I think I'm doing good.

Woodstove. 'Bout 5 cords a year. All hardwoods, mostly oak.

What kind of "face cord" are you talking about? Since it's not a defined term, it can mean anything, which really means, it means nothing.

There's no argument about what a cord is. Stick with the proper terms, and there's less misunderstanding.

12-14. 30 year old boiler with domestic hot. The romance of splitting and stacking went away many years ago but I never got tired of saving $$.

Usually about 5 cords per year.

Still no snow here and fairly warm temps. If this keeps up my wood usage will be very low this year.

We burn right at 10 cords per year in an airtight woodburner (Old Earthstove) that has recently been restored to good working order thanks to a Miller welder. Our home has about 2,000 of floor space in two stories, one burried half in the ground; 8 foot ceilings top and bottom. We also have oil-fired base-board heat and we burn about 100 gallons of oil per winter. Average high in January is 34 with a low of 16 - we see 3 or 4 days every winter when its between -10 and -20 but other than that its not severe. Our heating season runs from about mid October until mid May. Ya see, to understand what that 10 cords means you have to know a lot more. Oh, our wood i primarily Maple, Elm, and White Oak with a measure of Red Oak and Cherry tossed in for pretty.

We use between 10 and 15 cord of wood in the owb depending on how the winter is and how much hard and soft wood there is. My uncle who has an owb and has already used 8 cords.

Your are right about it not being a defined term.In my area a Face Cord is generally 4 high by 24-26 inches wide and 8 foot long.Basically about 1/2 cord of wood

5-6 cords. This year it's been absolutely mild most of November with today's temp being a balmy 52 degrees.
Most years we would have had a few snow storms already but not this year at least till now anyways.

The firewood I cut is mostly beech, hard and soft maple and yellow birch.

I moved into our 1500 sq ft house in 2001 and burnt 6-7 cords for the first 2 years. Now I've gotten ahead of my cutting schedule so my wood is a full year drying, I've insulated the s**t out of the house, and I close off a back room during the winter. The past 2 years have been warm and I've burned under 4 cords each year. We burn maple, beech, birch, and some cherry.

About 8 to 9 full cord per year. 100% wood heat with a 20+ year old hot water "boiler" in the basement.

I also have a wife who likes it 80 in the winter and 62 in the summer! :dizzy:

We go through about 6 full cords a year of mixed hard/soft wood:

- Central Boiler 5036 classic
- CB is 40' from house, pipes insulated with 4" foam wrap buried 10-15"
- 3500sf house
- wife keeps house at 74deg
- live in central virginia

There ya go. Other areas, it's more like a third. :dizzy:

But a cord is always a cord.

Last year we went through approx 8-10 cords.

This year, if things keep on like they are, maybe 5.

It's been terribly warm here.

Stay safe!

1 CORD = 4' X 4' X 8' PILE OF WOOD

In North America, that is it. Now, when getting into actual volume and mass of actual wood, it's another story. The CORD piled dimensions are still 4x4x8. Call your pile whatever: rick, full, face, lambchop, gibone, Holz.

The cord Nazi's are now dismissed.

P.S. 24/7 wood heat with 2 stoves. 4-6 cords/year mixed hardwood: Paper Birch, Red Maple, Green Ash, little Red Oak, plus some Spruce and Fir mixed for those shoulder days in Fall and Spring.
