I know some/many of you have experienced very low temp's already this season, but tonight we're hitting a low for the season so far for my area (norhtern WV).. right now it's 5 with a windchill of -8.. supposed to get near 0 with wind-chills' approaching -25 tonight so I got the good 'ol hotblast firin' good so I can load 'er up here shortly for the rest of the night and half the morning tomorrow... nights like tonight reinforce how glad I am to have switched back to pure wood heat.... with my old oil-furnace, anytime the temp would drop below 15 outside, 'I would have nothing but problems with that friggin thing and end up working on it all night long to keep the house a cold 65... now if I really wanted to, i could run the temp up to 90+ with the only work being throwing a few logs in and openin up the draft controls.. lol

The wind is howling outside. It sounds both near and distant. To my right is a humidified igloo cooler full of various premium cigars. It's about to get opened. Within the last 10 minutes
I placed a chunk of shagbark hickory on top of a thick bed of coals generated by copious amounts of silver maple and red oak. I'm watching an msnbc show about a colorado prison where everyone seems to be either a gang member or a homo. I'm glad I'm not there. Watching them makes me feel better about my life. I sit here by the fire wandering what drives a man to be a prison guard. Checking butts and being in jail for a paycheck is unacceptable to me. I think I'll grab another diet coke.

Coldest Night

This is our coldest night also. It is about 7 degrees at 9:00Am with the sun out.

It was 8°F when I got up at 8am here in Richmond. It's a toasty 14° now at 9am. Got up 2P at 3:30, fed the stove, and opened the air up a little. 63° inside when I got up. 69 now.

Ian

Edit... those temps were with the outside wireless thingy.. the old fashioned thermometer on the front porch reads 6°.

Cold in MN

-26 this morning. I just spent the night filling the stove. Every 4 to 6 hours I would add a few more logs. Mostly split oak with some very dry elm. It is cold but we see this usually 10 to 15 times a year here in MN. The house is right around 70 and the LP never kicked in all night. I might have saved enough money last night to get a new saw. I hate the cold but love wood heat.

You guys got it good. Its -7 here this morning. I was planning on a morning session in the woods then a return this afternoon for another load, think I'll wait till this afternoon to get started. I don't mind the cold too much but when the mercury is in the negative range I tend to stay near the fire.

It's a warm front here compared to yesterday. Yesterday morning woke up to -16. It didn't get above zero until after lunch. This morning 4 above.

I like it better when it is about 20-30F. Sounds like we might get some towards the end of the month.

It was 16 degrees here in MD. when I got up at 8:30, the wind is gusting to 25-30 MPH with a -6 wind chill!! I got up at 3:30 and put a couple logs in both the stoves. I didn't check the temp. outside at that point, no glasses on, couldn't see the dang thing, and the old bladder was looking for some relief at that point, ( the reason I was up in the first place). I hear what your saying pain cow, Why would anyone want to earn a living in a prison??? Have you ever seen what kind of money a prison guard makes!! Kind of makes you wonder. Back on track here, it sure is nice and toasty in here, 77 degrees, man I love a wood stove!! The house has a natural gas furnace that's 40 years old, and as much as it's used, it should last another 40, unless natural gas isn't used by then, probably be considered to dirty for the environment!! Well, Happy New Year to all!!

-18°F right now. I just woke up to the worst sound imaginable, the propane furnace kicking in! Still had good coals in the woodstove, filled her up with some ironwood and oak, and should have it well above thermostat temperature shortly.

Good thing Da Packers is playing in Arizona today, dem Lambeau Field benches would be C-O-L-D!

-29 below last night

We had -25 below yesterday and -29 below last night. If I was using LP Gas, I would be sitting in front of a space heater and the house would be 64 degrees because the furnace couldn’t keep up.

I filled the OSB at 9:00 pm, set the aqua-stat to 170, the thermostat to 70 and called it a night. Woke up at 6:00 am to 70 degrees in the house, the OWB still had some wood and enough hot coals to last most of the day so I cranked up the stat to 74 put in a few logs and came in for coffee. My burn time would be longer but most of my wood was cut at 16 inches and split for a smaller stove. Old habits!!

How many of you play with your aqua-stat settings? I find that I save more wood if I turn down my stat during the day and set it back up to 170 on the colder nights. I know!! I should let most of my coals burn up but at -29 below I just rake over the coals, toss in a few chunks and let that puppy go for most of the day.

Gott’a love this wood heat.

soo I ended up being up till almost 5am this morning from this d**n cough I have... easily kept the house at 74 all night but did go through a good bit more wood than the usual night.. now I get to take my congested @$$ out to bring in more wood...

31 below night before last. 30 below last night. 14 below right now. Sure am glad it's not windy out.

This whole weekend has been about 74ºF, wind 5-10 mph, here in Kailua HI
where the President is vacationing. :) He leaves tonight for DC and looks like some mighty cold weather. I saw the motorcade twice last week.
