I don't know about the best overall Stihl saw ever. I guess that on the west coast it would be one with big CC's.

However, the best Stihl in "Small wood country" would be the one that really put Stihl on the map when they introduced anti vibration.

And that would be the 041AV.

this is a loaded question!

every stihl saw has its intended market and it is best in its class.
I'll highlight a few

the little ms170, rather than buying a saw from a box store you can but it has a warranty and dealer support.

the ms210-250 is great for occasional users who just need to trim a fallen branch or trim up a tree..

ms290-310-390 is a good saw for farmers and homeowners who need more than a little trimming saw, if you need to drop a tree you can do it easily.

ms460 a versitle pro grade saw that will cut down almost anything you need it to cut yet light enough to use it all day.

ms660- the saw you use if you want to get big power yet still being able to use it every day, can run a 60'' bar if it has to

ms880- the saw of choice if you are milling big trees frequently, or if you have to cut trees that are over 50'' in diameter. this saw provides the power needed for any job

Of the two I have

I have both an 026 and a 660.

The 660 is unbelievably unstoppable. I once chewed thru an armored car with it.

It is the get down and dirty get outta my way im coming round cuz I aint smart enough to get a big enough bar to do this in one fowl swoop the first time would you mind moving that overhanging crap away from me from the fence row why is there a two row corn planter sitting up here in the fence row watch those chips fly oh yeah I should be paying more attention to what im doing oh was that my leg saw.

Love it.

But that 026, boy howdy, I dont know. I just like it. Its like a promise that you just keep coming back for even though your wifes at home. It aint pretty and it aint big but it just makes you think, dang, you good!

026 is my vote.

Worst is a 660 the morning after. She aint forgiving after youve been out playing with her sister.

I will have to agree

That is nice

MS200T, it's the one Stihl that no other manufacturer has an answer for. You say MS260 somebody will say (rightly, IMO) that the 346xp is more powerful. You say MS660 Magnum, somebody will say the 390xp is smoother, or the 7900 is lighter and nearly as powerful. Dunno, I've never owned a big saw other than the 660. MS361? Other 60cc saws have their fans, and some would say that the 372xp makes the whole 60cc class irrelevant. But if you say MS200T, about all anybody can say is that it's expensive. The other climbing saws may be cheaper, but they're all either heavier or less powerful, or both. I'm not saying that the other Stihls aren't good saws, or aren't THE best Stihl for a given person, but the MS200T is the only one literally in a class by itself.

For me it's the 1996 066 Magnum.

Is that the original big daddy with the square cover, no decomp, dual port, not a red light and rated at 7.8hp? If it is then that would be my second choice. For me it goes like this: 056 magII-066 mag-090-028 super, in that order.

Pretty Close To What I Was Thinking!!
Except Close Only Counts In Horse Shoes And Hand Grenades!

044 is the best saw Stihl ever made. A close second is the famous 029 super. You can't hurt um and they willrun forever. Tuff as nails and will sawum too.

The BEST Stihl is a Husky in sheeps clothing.

I cant believe I just said that. I dont even know if I have ever seen one.

Or would want to.

my 390 is,

because I don't own any other so they can't cut me any wood!!!!

I don't know much about the older saws but would vote for the 460 as a do everthing saw. Fall, buck, and cut firewood of most any size comfortably. Muffler port matched and modded of course.

Got a 028 that's stihl running hard, I think she's about a 78 or 79 model I bought new, it's scary how many hours it's run, never done nothing but normal maint, the 038 is bullet proof as well, the 361 is dang good as well as the 660, my cousins have logged for four generations, they think the sun set on the 044 and still pick them up when they find them in good shape.

As far as Stihl goes, all the "oh's" were the best.... of course there all extinct species now.
I like the 084.
