What does the 311 compare to?

I'm wanting to fix an older saw that compares to his current still ms311 for my dad to use. He has only ever used clamshell saws, and has never operated a pro saw.

Here are the models I was thinking about looking out for,

10-10S
034 or 036
Husky 61
Homie SXL
Echo 590 or 620 (Not older but a comparable saw)

What older saws do you think would compare well to the ms311?

If by "Compare," you mean lighter with, probably, more yank: 036.

No experience with any on the list besides the 590/620 but I’ll put my 2 cents in. My stock 590 was similar to a stock Stihl 039 with 24” bars on both, and after a muffler mod on the 590 it wasn’t even close. A MM’d 620 is stronger yet. The modified 590 also cuts with my friends 362 with 20” bars and outcuts it with 24” bars.

Either of the Echos are gonna be far stronger, lighter, and more reliable than the 311, and I’d reckon the 036 and 61 would be the same way

By my records, darn 311 weighs a bit more than the 10mm 044. In any case, the 311 is a very heavy 60 cc saw.

I think, after the 311, Dad would be delighted with any of the 60 cc Pro Stihls: 034S, 036, MS360.

This may be a stupid question, but if he already has the 311, why do you want to get him something similar? Tell us how he'll use the saw - what type/size wood? Maybe somebody will suggest something smaller (or larger.)

He has a echo cs-300, husky 435 and the stihl ms311. He cuts about 3-4 cord per year and falls Douglas fir no more than 20” in diameter. I think a 60cc saw is plenty for what he does

Perfect 357XP territory- or the sister saw 359.
Or get them in the more stylish red and black 2156 or 2159.

Them there will make the 435 seem like some kind of famine suffering long lost cousin and should kick aside the old lumpy 311 with ease
