GIVER!! I think this is a post where loggers and arborist collide. Fear is a good thing it keeps people alive, but I would cut it from the info given. Then again I would have to see it to say for sure.

I can think of three things here.

1.) Your scared and don't want to do this.

2.) sound like limited space(possibly limited escape) and a rotten leaner, have your will filled out and filed.

3.) Tally up all your belongings that add up to more than 50cents and put them all in a trust or something so when you destroy something or someone you don't lose everything. Yup even with a no liability contract a lawyer can/will at least cost you everything and possibly more while you try to save everything. Even an llc or an S corp won't save you unless you have followed the laws and regs to the letter and the vast majority don't.

Just cause your insured for a million doesn't mean that the possible ensuing litigation won't be for more.

Walk away.

No shame in that, I have been called just for the fact that I have walked away before. Honesty gets you father than just about anything. But if your gonna do this fake'um out good, make sure your jeans are stagged off, get some old spenders, a wore out old hickory shirt and a lip full of snoose, if your gonna play the part ya might as well look the part also. Run your saw wide open to warm it up, this may save you some grief hopefully you will have a melt down and blow up your saw so you can't do the job.

Don't do this.

Being a little scared now and then isn't a bad thing and pushes you to being better. Sounds to me like you are more than that, listen to the voice on you shoulder saying stand down. How many times in the past have listened to that voice and been damn happy you did, now how many times have you not listened and wished to hell you would have? If you do this take a good long look at your Mrs. and kiddos before you go and think about them on the drive over. Doing this has saved me more than once.

What ever your choosing let us know how things go.

So do the next best thing...

Find someone from here with both the desire and ability, make yourself a finders fee, and get to be onsite when the tree comes down.

As slow as it's been, I'm sure somebody here would like a crack at it, and it sounds like it should pay pretty well.

Easy for everyone to say " go for it!"
But I would make sure I was charging top dollar for this job if it I did it, not that I could in a million years. If he finds a low bidder then let him take his chances..this is an easy way for you to: 1) make sure all risk is worth it, 2) get out of it honorably, by being outbid. When some lowballer drops it onto his house you still may get the clean up job. JMO.

well i got a job and i'm a little afraid about cutting it. the reason i'm a little afraid of it is that the first limb is about 100 to 125 feet off the ground. and plus the tree is dead and is between 2 houses that are about 25 feet from the base of the tree. and i got experience to cut the tree but i don't want to mess with .and they ain't no tree cutter company that will come and cut it down for this guy.so what do i do about this kind of job? do i walk away or try to cut it and hope for the best

200' !
Sounds like you use the same tree measuring method as Tomtrees.

I am a 15 year logger with several years (previous) of residential and power-line arborist work under my belt. My "mentor" is one of the best in New England. That's why I sound confident.
I suppose I shouldn't egg the guy on without seeing the thing myself..

Good of you to say that after you already egged the guy on. Your self confidence may (or may not) be justified but does that give you the right to push someone else into a dangerous situation that could kill them or cause them endless legal trouble?

If he can't get it down safely, why is he in the business?
My confidence in myself is supreme. I have given him the best advice I have.
Now, thanks for your sage wisdom, and have a great day.

No disrespect intended, but are you in the tree care business? When you say maybe you'll be ready for the next big one, it sounds like you are a beginer doing work for friends to get started. I live in MD and would love the chance to climb a 200'tree. I just walked away from a 110' dead Oak for a friend at church. He wanted me to throw it into his woods, 180* against the lean. If it were green I might try it. But, it's been dead for several years. No leaves hanging, most of the smaller branches have fallen off allready. There are no limbs on the side he wants to throw to having grown on the edge of the woods. On the off side are several large limbs making it off ballanced in the wrong direction. I told him the only way I would risk taking it down was to rent a 50 ton crane and piece it out. He didn't want to pay that kind of money so I had to turn him down. If I were you I'd walk away, Joe.
