Bad day here as I had to put down my partner this morning.

15 year old Dalmatian

She lived a good life up until the last couple of months.

Lucie Feb. 19, 1996 -- Aug. 2, 2010

Rest in peace old girl

Sorry for your loss. Speaking from experience, it helps to share the grief - the longer you knew the buddy the harder it is to get over.

The Power of a Dog

There is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; and when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie- Perfect passion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart for a dog to tear

When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vet's unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will find - it's your own affair- But... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!) When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gone - wherever it goes - for good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian Clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:

For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short time loan is as bad as a long- So why in - Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Rudyard Kipling.

Great post Labman - thanks. Reading that just now was tough thinking of my old dog.

I have never cried so hard as when I lost my Buddy of 18 years just a few months ago.

Alderman - Sorry to hear of your loss. Dog lovers have always had one 'Best Dog - Best Friend' and it sounds like she was yours.

Shari

Sorry about your loss , I know how you feel I've been there before .
Seen this film once when I was a kid , haven't watched it since .

This is from Wikipedia ,

"The movie went on to become an important cultural film for baby boomers.[2] Old Yeller's death is perhaps among the most tearful scenes in cinema. It currently has a rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.[3] One critic cited it as "among the best, if not THE best" of the boy-and-his-dog films.[4] Critic Jeff Walls notes: "Old Yeller, like the Wizard of Oz and Star Wars, has come to be more than just a movie; it has become a part of our culture. If you were to walk around asking random people, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who did not know the story of Old Yeller, some who didn’t enjoy it or someone who didn’t cry. The movie’s ending has become as famous as any other in film history."

I feel your pain buddy, I really do.I have buried a few pals in my life, but I know I have the hardest one is up ahead for me.My lab Abigail has got to be the most loyal dog I have ever known, and she has just gone over the ten year mark. Her muzzle is gone grey, and it takes her a little longer to get up out of her bed than she used to.I know that putting her down five years from now will be a task that I am not up too.

Sorry to hear about your loss alderman. You can't beat a loyal dog for a best friend.

I had to put my Black Lab, Sam to sleep Good Friday of this year. He was about eleven years old. That dog was a part of my life no other dog that I have ever had. I have a female Chocolate Lab that is about eight years old and showing a lot of signs of aging. I dread thinking of the day that she will leave too.

God and Dog

Our pastor had lost his dog recently and his Sunday sermon was about his loss. Very touching. He played this video which was awesome. I hope it gives you peace.

The movie "Old yeller" should be rated NC-17 for extreme trauma to the audience. I can't bring myself to watch the darn movie because my 18 year old lab mix looked too much like Old Yeller.

Good post Labman.

Dogs make life better. That is why we give them our hearts.

To the OP and all of the others that have posted about the loss of their best buddies I am sorry.

My buddy is resting quietly against my feet as I type this. Nothing is better at friendship than a dog.

I am very sorry for your loss. There is nothing like the unconditional love and companionship that a Dog gives to his/her person.
