Here is the only e-mail I got, the one from the guy who resold his after one job:

Hi, I purchased the saw at a local small engine repair shop this spring. This guy at this little small engine shop originally had three of these saws brand new in a box one of them he sold about 3 months before me and the last one he said he was keeping for his own personal collection. He fixes and sells new and used chainsaws but he is not a liscensed dealer. He told me he had purchased 3 of these saws brand new from some wholesaler he had connections through. I have been unable to find out where this saw was made. Unless I'm not looking in the right spots it simply does not have a tag saying where it was made. I've tryed looking up the serial number which lead me to another dead end. I called Gary whom I bought the saw from and he told me that the major components like engine would have been made in Germany and Switzerland but the rest he said could be made anywhere because i guess Stihl has manufacturing plants all over the world. I would like to believe Gary but I am always a skeptic so I will keep trying to find answers. I hope this answers any questions. Thanks

Easy!
Newer south american late model saws that are still being made don't have the flat head screws! They have the torx bolts! And the ones produced since 2008 says MS 070 on the box, but not the saw! Also another tell tale is the cylinder! Mahle or KNOCK OFF!!!!

Were abouts in Ohio are you.

Musta saw that SUPER clean 630 with the gray 272 high-top go over $300 on ebay[/QUOTE]

No. Didn't see the saw on Ebay. I just won't give my stuff away. I know what my saws are worth. I'll let it sit and rot before I give it away.

I can understand how you feel there. I let a beautiful 272XP go for $200 because I was tight on money. I vowed that would be the last thing I sold at a "give away" price. I don't ask premium prices on my stuff, but I will not sell it for less than it is worth.

Things are worth what people will pay for them. Otherwise WHAT is the meaning of "worth"? I know a guy near me who has lost at least $100,000- in value on his old radio collection storing it in leaky sheds waiting to get what he "knows' it is all worth. That's a big blow to his heirs purely as a result of stubborn pride. At least saws take the leaky shed treatment better though.

If something I want to sell doesn't sell, I wait awhile, market it better and/or lower the price until it does. My opinion is anything else is simply hoarding.

I like hoarding more than selling anyway....

Stihl 070s, continued

Teddy - Thanks for the info.

What's your take on this saw in these pics?

http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages...1211,422151160&formats=0,0,0,0,0,0,0&format=0

It looks like it has torx bolts, but it does say 070 on the saw and the manual doesn't say MS 070

Not sure I understood what you meant about the cylinder/piston.

I lived in Columbus Ohio....originally from NE Ohio, Canton area.....but I moved to SLC, UT last year...need to update my arboristsite profile.

Thanks for your input, I'm actually considering buying one of these 070s if I can get a good sense of what they actually are...

Stihl 070 serial number beginning with "S"

So, the seller of the saw above did provide the serial number today:

Here is the serial number. S106100918014. Please
let me know what you find. I was told that it is
an actual Stihl.

I left a message at Stihl headquarters today to try to identify it.

Anybody know what the prefix "S" means?

Bring it to Virginia and I'll buy it. I do not have a 70cc or better saw to trade.

LOL...

I THINK Todd's point was to sell the trailer locally, so it DOES NOT have to be moved lol :dizzy: :poke:

I would like the trailer, and I DO HAVE a 70cc saw I would trade...

but Mass is NO WHERE NEAR RENO!! lol

good luck with the LOOOONNNGGG MOVE!!!

good point!

Here;s a good one!! 55cc pullin a 34" bar!!!

http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/grd/2051372238.html

Looks more like a 24" bar to me Jay. People seldom list the correct bar length in ads IME. My XP1020 was described to me as having a "36 inch" bar. In reality, it has a 30" bar with about 29" effective cut length with the 'big dogs' on the saw. Has Cannon HU3063R (which means Large Homelite Mount, 30" cut length, .063g chain, roller nose) right on the dang bar. Heck, the total unmounted length is about 35.5"....:D

CL people are something else. At least the guy actualy wrote "Timber Bear" correctly. Ever see all the "tember bear" listings on feebay? Dozens of 'em. Just do a search for "McCulloch Bar".....:bang:

we;;, I just had to make sure he knew it was 55, not 65cc....and it would never pull a 34" bar... fairly nicely...

my reply: FYI,

this is the typical A-hole response:

"
