Water Oak or Black Tupelo/ Gum?

Hello,
Posted some pics of this stuff earlier, a lot thought it was sweet gum, pretty sure that leaf is not sweet gum, sweet gum more like 5 pointed star. As close as I could tell it is either water oak or black gum, if anyone has any clue, please let me know. Thanks, James

Another way you can tell if it's sweet gum or black gum is to walk around the base of the tree in the fall in your bare feet ( or socks ). If you start doing a funny dance, it's sweet gum. Used this method myself a few times to great, um, 'success'.

Thanks for the replies guys, it definitley doesn't look like the other two white oaks that are down, just didn't know if anyone knew if water oak was different. I've never run across ash, I'll hafta look at those, I guess I will find out when I try to split it heh. Thanks, James
