I just bought a used Stihl 028 AV Super (18") and am wondering if there is a way to determine it's age. Serial number? Also, where can I find an owner's manual? Not available from dealer.

I have purchased the Stihl fuel and chain oil, mixed some premium fuel, installed a new chain, and look forward to years of good service as it has good compression. (got 'er at a garage sale for $125.00 Cdn).

Anything else to watch for on these particular models?

I Fell-Welcome to the board. You can get both age (by S/N) and an owner's manual from Stihl. I don't know about Stihl Canada's website, but Stihl USA's website has a page you can go to and order the owner's manual, and you can email them to get the YOM.

The 028 is a fine saw, and you should be very pleased with it. There's been alot of discussion about it on this forum. Do a search, and pack a lunch. You'll be reading for a while!! :dizzy:

Thanks for that. Also, what is the difference between the Super and the Wood Boss?

I used 'er this morning for the first time since getting it Saturday, and with the new blade it goes through wood like a hot knife through butter. Love it!
 
I think that Tony is right.
CSCC lists 28AV at 43 cc, 28AV type 2 at 47 cc, and WB at 47 cc. There is no mention of the Super.
A German collectors site i sometimes visit list only one version, 028 at 51.5 cc. That could very well be the version that was sold as the Super in the US.
 
I was using the saw today a fair bit and noticed that it tended to die while idling at times - but not always, and would kinda fall flat or bog coming off idle when throttle was hit - always. Happy as a clam at any higher rpm.

Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like a low (L) screw that might need leaned out a little bit. While it's idling, is it running fast, or kinda burping along, and then dies?

Try replacing the fuel filter, which should be done anyways. and look around at the carb settings, it may be slightly lean or rich on the L screw.

Now he's gonna be all confused! :dizzy:

By him saying it bogs and goes flat, I usually associate that with a lower RPM and richer condition. That's just my call on it. I'm just a guy with some chainsaws, and am by no means an expert.

It never hurts to cover all your bases does it? besides, by changing the fuel filter now, its saving time later.

Oh absolutely not. I reread your post and I missed where you said "or rich" and I just read that you advised him to go lean, and I recommended going rich. That's what I get reading too fast. Changing the filter is a good idea. Didn't intend to come across as a know-it-all. I hope I didn't. :angel:

Thanks fellas, I'll look into these things. At the time I did try adjusting the screw but it didn't seem to be out of it's sweet spot. I'm wondering if it's something heat related, after she's really warmed up???
BTW, the spark plug looks perfect.
 
Well I hate to bring this up, but if it's having trouble idling and bogging on accleration, I would also look for an air leak. Hopefully it's just a loose or torn impulse line or manifold. But, it could be leaking oil seals or a leaking cylinder gasket or crankcase gasket.

Thanks thompson1600, I'll look into those things too. It runs like a top once it's over that flat spot off idle, doesn't smoke or anything out of the ordinary. Has good compression too.

The fuel/oil mix is five to one right? (made you blink!)

Stihl 028 Av super Bar

HI I recenly got a stihl 028 Av Super from my uncle he only put only a few hours on it back when he bought it and for about the past 10 or so years it just has been sitting around collecting dust. When he gave it to me I put fresh gas in it, and with a couple of pulls it started right up, and ran perfect. Any way I feel that the 16" bar on it is too small could you tell me what the bigest bar size is for the stihl 028 AV Super that wont afect the power it puts out resulting in loss of torqe, and how many HP it puts out .

It is 51.4cc and 3.4hp, if memory serves, and probably at its best with that 16" bar - but in a pinch you could certainly put an 18 or 20" on it - just don't leave it on there as standard equipment, at least not if you are cutting hardwood....
