Just got this toy today and made a couple videos of it reading rpm's off of my 029 Super.

How does the reading compare to other tachometers? I guess I'll let the videos describe it better.

The 029 has a new carb kit and I tuned it by ear and still have not used this saw to cut any wood. I hope someone can also tell me if it sounds lean. I saw a rpm read of over 14k.

Any tips or advice greatly appreciated to get my saw running better, not that it runs bad as it starts fine and has great throttle response.

If a different video is needed, let me know how to make a better video.

Tach must be defective, it's still showing over 2600 RPM with the saw shut off.

I think it just freezes @ the last rpm read when it senses no signal. I'll try it again soon and keep saw running and just disconnect clip from plug boot to see if it will go to 0.

Haven't looked up idle rpms of this saw and high rpms. Anyone have specs to what they are?

Besides the smoke(40:1) can anyone tell by the sound of saw if it needs carb adjustments?
 
I got mine yesterday and tried it out. I havent got to make a video too sick.

The instructions say that the plug where you put the wire into the tach needs to be pointed at the plug wire. Mine worked then. Give it a try.
 
Just got back inside after playing some more with this new toy for the past 2 1/2 hours with other saws. I got it to read wirelessly but it needs to be about an inch away from the plug boot with the antenna plug aimed straight at it. It would be nicer if it was able to pick up a little farther without using the alligator clip, but it's fine for what I need to do with it. I clip it to the boot and it works.

The freezing is normal, after there is no spark signal it just stays at whatever the last read was until I click reset. I tried unplugging with saw running and it freezes then I plug back in and starts reading again.

Backlit display is great for nighttime readings and flashlight is also good to use to plug alligator clip to boot.

I just wanted to see if anyone does know by sound of saw if I should adjust carb any.

Thanks superman. I'll figure it out one of these days.

Edit: Just realized I already need to adjust the chain and have never used this saw in any wood. Bar/Chain still new.

You run it like that much longer and you'll be buying a new P&C.
Your way to lean on the high needle.Richen it up.
You should be taching 13,200 max on that saw.
 
Better to start really rich where you hear it 4-stroking early, then tune up to your target RPM. The opposite is never good.

Thank you. This is the first time I have done a tach test on this saw since I installed the carb kit. I have not revved saw like this before tach test, I was even hesitant to go full throttle those few times that I recorded.

You think about 1/4 turn open on the high needle should be good enough.

This is what I was hoping for, someone with good info to help me tune it right. I'll do the same to my 390 and 440 once I get it around 13,200 on the 029. Thanks again.

Better to start really rich where you hear it 4-stroking early, then tune up to your target RPM. The opposite is never good.

I'm going to open up the high a little tomorrow and try to get it around 13k like scooter suggested.

I have been waiting to run this saw into wood until I got a tach, so now I have it and want to make sure it gets tunned properly. Hope tach reading is close enough to make safe power.
 
Yep thats a bit fast for a 029, thats the good thing about having a tach...you know for sure

Not knowing how the carb was set since the carb kit is why I have not used this saw yet. This video was the first time I started it since I did the carb. Hope I can get it to stay around 13,200.
 
I think you will feel better about running a saw once you know where you have it set. I was worried mine were lean. I had set them up rich to make sure. Makes a difference for sure. I think we are gonna be happy with our purchase for sure.
 
Time will tell, I guess, if this will prove to be a good tach. I've never owned one so I can't say mine is better than yours. It seems to read fine with the wire. We'll see.

I've been looking for rpm specs on the 029 Super and decided to look for MS290 instead and found them. They should be the same, right?

Here's copied/pasted info. I found on the MS290:

The MS 290 is equipped with a 2-stroke, single-cylinder, 3.45 cubic inch engine that is capable of producing 3.8 horsepower at 9,500 rpm. The cylinder bore is 1.81 inches and the piston stroke is 1.34 inches. Engine idle speed is rated at 2,800 rpms, and the maximum operational speed is 13,500 rpms. The engine is equipped with an all-position diaphragm carburetor with integrated fuel pump. Air filtration is accomplished using both a coarse prefilter and a two-piece box filter.

So if my idle is OK, where it's at, at about 2600 then I just need to drop down below 13,500
 
Yep keep it down for sure....I still have mine a bit fat...but I am still learning and its for added insurance until i get more comfortable
 
Using warm tach on MS440

Well, here you have it. It works wirelessly on the 440 now. I flooded(backed H out too much) the 029 and didn't feel like taking plug out so I messed with 440 instead. I wish I could have tested it on the 029 but I'll do it another day.

440 is bogging so needs adjusting as well. I'm only going to need them early spring.

The more I play with this tach the more I like it. Just came to my parents house and tried reading the 7311 and the old 33cc Homelite Ranger and it picked it up real nice wirelessly. The first day tests must have been mostly because tach was in below temps for long period of time that affected the wireless function.

I have a video of the 7311 that I'll post up later. One thing that I saw was it would not read right after 7k rpms on the 7311, like it was getting some kind of interference from ignition at anything over 5k.

Does the Dolmar/Makita 7311 have different ignition that causes tach to jump around while revving? Idle seems fine at around 2700rpms.

The Homelite worked great wirelessly from idle to 13k+.

I just couldn't record and test revs at the same time, was using my phone for these two saws.

I tried to show in this video how close it reads. Plug boot is actually closer to my thumb and reading was still pretty good where I positioned tach for the video. I tried again to get the higher rpms on this saw by slowly revving it up but it only read up to about 9200 more throttler after that and tach would read under 2k. Tried it again on the little homelite and it read fine up to 13k, so there is something with the 7311 that doesn't let the tach read higher. Refresh time seems to be great as I only kept the homelite at full throttle for about 1 sec and got high rpm.

I'm happy with the purchase now that I know I need to keep it out of extreme temps for long periods of time. For the money I think it is a great tool to add to my tool box.

In the video I turn on the backlight to show it's function and screen shows the setup as 2cycle 1cylinder. Tach can be set to 2cycle 1,2,or 4cylinder or 4cycle 1,2,3,4,5,6,or 8cylinder.
