i live in upper Illinois 30 min away from freeport and i could grow a himalayan birch in the ground but i dont want it to die from borers or disease. will it do well potted and if it is potted can it be outside during the summer/winter? i want it to an indoor plant because the borer bug cant get it from in there but i mean what days can it be outside like does it like really hot days with alot of water of cool warm days with sun out.

also if i decided to plant it outside would it be ok or is it just as susceptible as it is anywhere else? just asking because people say that its susceptibility is wrong and its strong its just that its planted in extreme hot/cold places and that's what makes it stressed. i have no idea if that's true so can someone please help

It is hardy in your zone. It is a deciduous tree that must have a dormancy period, if very well cared for it might survive a time without dormancy, but it will ultimately kill the tree.

Are birch borders rampant in your area?

Even if they are, chances are good that the tree is much safer in the ground than in the pot. Growing trees long term in containers is not without it's difficulties -- IF you really want to grow it in a pot, you will need to learn about Bonsai.

actually i haven't even noticed any but when i looked it up it said they live where ever birch trees can live and i dont want it to die or anything i mean it is an awesome tree. also if the tree needs dormancy can i just leave it outside during the winter or will that not work?

Yes you could put it outside in the winter, but; How are you going to get the tree enough light? Unless you have a greenhouse your putting it in, I don't see any way to get it enough light. No one who is experienced with bonsai would attempt to grow this tree indoors even for part of the year, your going to kill it if you have it in the house.

T_T i see your point but what about the borer? i haven't seen any sign of it but if i bring in a highly susceptible tree in wont that attract them to our area? i know it only attacks stressed trees but if it does get borers will that make them stay in our area or what? also idk the size of the Himalayan birch i bought it could only be 4in if that's the case do i keep it in a pot outside until its big enough or do i plant it then and there?

I really doubt 1 tree is going to attract borers if they are not already there, I'm sure there are already many birch in your area. One tree will make no difference.

So this is just a seedling? It should have been planted in spring, you will almost certainly kill it if you plant a seedling now. You will have to keep it in a partially shaded area and care for it in the pot for the summer then plant it in fall after the leaves drop.

You may need to put it into a large pot during the summer as it grows. Have you look at it's roots at all? If it is really root bound it will need replanting, if not, then it can go for a while in this container. Can you post a photo of the tree?

Just open it up right away when it comes, don't let it sit out in the sun and bake. Put it where it will get shade, especially where it will get shade from the afternoon sun. Make sure the pot it came in has drain holes and water it.

Once you get it and we know what it looks like we can figure out the next step.

Yes. I suspect it will need to be potted up if it stays in the pot for the summer. You could try planting in the ground if you will be around to keep it watered. If you plant it protect it from animals with a wire wrap - chicken wire. Proboly safer to keep it in a pot till fall.

First thing remove the tape put it in a shaded area and water it.

It's harder to plant trees in the heat of summer. A fall planting will be easier on it. Make sure where ever it is rabbits or deer can't get at it.

ok i got it into a new pot and i watered it and now its in the sun, it doesnt get full sun throughout the day where it is, it gets sun from about 1:00pm to nighttime so from this point do i just keep it the way it is until fall when i plant it?

Photos of new pot and placement its 6pm when this was taken

Yes, just pull that thing out over on the side. Use a pot that is just about one size larger, that would likely be a 6" pot but an 8" would likely be okay to, especially is you use a faster draining soil, such a as orchid or cactus soil.
