Jim, I reckon 50cc is barely enough for a firewood saw in Eucs, I'd stretch to the 357 if possible, or a Makita DCS6401 from here Makita 64cc Petrol Chainsaw 2-Stroke DCS6401 | eBay.
The 6401 is a fair bit bigger and heavier saw than the 346 but it'll cut 18" dead Eucs a lot easier too.

Terry will be along in a moment to disagree with me on the 50cc isn't big enough comment :D

Or what about one of Matt's pseudo 365's Al ?

Yours seems to be holding up OK.

go the 57 to 65 cc range smaller than this is not really big enough in australia, I have used a few smaller than this in the 45 to 55 cc range and they just aren't cut out for long term firewood cutting of anything of any size. Great for pruning and property maintenance but when you are cutting a decent aussie hardwood they either don't last or just take too damn long!

Thanks. This is just the sort of info I need. Sounds like the 359 is leading the charge at the moment. A MS362 would be great, but difficult to get for the same price as a Husky from the US. Time to do some searching on the 359. I hear they are great to mod. Not that that's my intention, yet.....

how about the ms261? i say its a better firewood saw then the 346.

Yes the 261 is better firewood saw in Australian conditions for sure. The air filter is probably the best on the market in its class and it has a bit more grunt than the 346 also.

Might be alright in the U.S but I wouldn't waste my time with one in oz ms362, maybe. 20 inch bar.

Have you tried a 261 yet...? I think it runs more like a 60cc saw than a 50cc and yes I have used mine to cut firewood.

hi an welcome Jim,

to 2nd what Rick said, go the Makita...its actually a german made dolmar in makita colours...Domar have been around for as long as Stihl and build a high quality saw. You wont get a better saw, either power or quality in that price range....and to top it off (pardon the pun) you can get a genuine piston and cylinder kit for about $200 that will make it a 79cc demon...dont worry about the bottom end...Dolmar share the same chassis bottom end for both the 64 and 79cc saw.

cheers,
Serg..

PS some one here bought one from that site and a mate of mine has just bought one, it should be here any day....hey cant wait to start cutting trees down. haha

Serg, I was going to ring today but got sidetracked.
I had a phone call the other night, a 691 and 681 Solo + bars and chains are for sale locally and the 681 only has about 20 hours use.
Also been converted to a decomp cylinder by an German ex-factory tech ;)

Waaaay too much money though :(

+1 for the 261 very impressive little saw even with 3/8 chian.:)
You can get one from the US posted with muff modd and limiter caps done for under $800.

Don't mind masculator he is a go big or go home kinda guy.

You had a ryobi by comparison A MS261 will be a whole new world to you.

I (david) bought a MS261 from the USofA, So did matt (MCW), andrew (sthilman441) and rudolf74 .

this is a great saw. It has plenty of torque and the best filter money can buy comes standard.
Look up the saws features it is a quality unit.

The makita 6401? that rick was mentioning is also a great saw it is 64 cc and costs about the same as the Ms261 (50cc) after you bay the frieght approx $150.00. Being a dolmar (made in germany) it is a good thing. You can buy a filter filter upgrade almost as good as the ms@261 standard filter:msp_ohmy:

The husky 346 is a quality 50cc chainsaw (but the MS261 is newer technology) nicko (sawtroll) will bs about it being better because it has a better balance.

Moved to Eden Al. had about 5 years of holidays here, and thought if we didn't try before the kids hit high school, we'd never make it.
It's been great so far. We were in Hurstbridge before which is also very nice. But less of a city feel here. Think its great for the kids to be able to grow up in this sort of environment.
I think most of the wood I'd be cutting would be in th 10"-16" range. maybe a small amnmount of bigger stuff. Mostly felled hardwood.
The 359 isn't in the AUS catalogue, but alot of parts seen to be interchangeable.ie 365.
I do like the sound of the xp, but I wonder if its a sports car compared to the 359. Not that I mind sports car preformance, but I'm not so big on the running costs. I'm probably way off the mark.
This is great though. I've got Husky and Stihl catalouges lying around the house, the wife's loving it.....

Hurstbridge Vic? I used to live in St Andrews for three years before I headed up to Beechworth 15 years ago. I said to the wife, if we were to move from here it would be in the vicinity of Eden. Being a nurse she's fine to find work anywhere and I'd shoot up the hill into the logging.

An XP will do you well as a 346XP will also. You can pick up a saw from the US but you do void any warranty if that matters otherwise the 346XP's have been going reasonably cheaply on Ebay Aus.

Probably right Rick on a little more than 50cc's.

That saw has had about a doz tanks through it so far, so good. I little crappy on the low side of the carb which I haven't got around to sorting as yet though, but apart from that she's a ripper. :msp_thumbup:
