Not sure if you guys in other states have noticed any changes, but things have been changing in Sydney. Stihl used to have a policy of selling only to dealers, and not discounting their prices. Part of the deal was that you had to be able to service the products. Dealerships were given to people other than chainsaw shops, but you still had to have a workshop - like mower shops etc.

Last couple months things have been changing. Sydney tools lost their license supposedly for discounting. They've gone to husky. The blue mountians stihl shop closed down. Mostly because the lady running the place was actually Mrs crabapple from Southpark. They hadn't sold anything in years.

An actual photograph of the lady who ran the stihl shop in the blue mountains;

The latest blow is GYC in Sydney. They were as far as I know the biggest stihl dealer in Sydney, certainly the one with the most parts in stock. They didn't discount, and toed the Stihl line generally, but Stihl didn't extend their license this year and instead decided to go in a 'different direction'.

They're selling in box stores. Mitre 10's mostly, which started early this year. One dealer was telling me that there have been a lot of returns from HO's buying home grade saws on special and then basically destroying them through lack of knowledge. The dealers are all required to fuel up the saw, explain the functions and demonstrate it running before letting you take it. Not the case at box stores, who also don't carry parts or service saws. There is now no excuse to not buy your saws directly overseas. If Stihl isn't going to offer dealer support then why have a presence in aus at all?

With the loss of GYC and the 3 Sydney tools stores, there is now no Stihl dealer in Sydney anywhere. There are a couple hardware stores that sell base models and string trimmers but no parts. The closest actual dealer would be either serven hills or penrith... about a 100km round trip. In contrast to that, Husky is ramping up dealer support and offering more deals to customers. I can see a lot of pros switching to husky over the next few years.

Are you other guys around the country seeing this sort of stuff too? Is stihl pulling out of the pro market in aus?

the one in penrith is #### ive been by abused by the owner he would not sell me a new clutch for my 066 because im not allowed to do major services on my saw i payed for lol he got a few words out of me with a very close fist went over to sevenhills bang of the shelf in my hand and they even offerd to change it for me at no cost

I've only been to the penrith store a couple times and was pretty unimpressed, but that blue mountains stihl shop is legendary. Every tree worker has a story about going in there (or several) and they're all good enough to make you wet your pants laughing. I think they locked that lady back up in the mental ward. We once sent her a joke 'excellence' certificate which looked very legit until you read all the small print. She received ticks in all the major categories; screaming at customers, the death stare and having birds nesting in her hair. I used to go in there sometimes just to touch things. She would literally scream at you if you touched so much as a plastic wedge. You had to buy a hard hat if you tried it on. Or touched it.

Shaun, perhaps I can make the picture a little clearer for our overseas friends. Sydney has a population of 4,500,000. And no Stihl dealer!

Wow , that sounds awful.I stop by the local Stihl dealer from time to time just to drink coffee. If he has it on the shelf and you want to try it out, here, put a little gas and oil in 'er and take 'er out back. There's some logs laying there you can cut on.
Need a part?Which do you prefer, new or used? Why used if you have one.Do you know how much a new handle bar for a 038mag2 is from Stihl?Right at $40.A good used 1 $5.
I hate to hear yall got it so bad down under.Maybe one of you fellows should open a sawshop yourself.

Yeah, I know 4.5m is not a lot compared to the bigger cities in the states, but it's the biggest city we have in aus.

And we've never had a 'proper' dealer, like redheadwoodshed describes. Not sure if it's our culture or what... it's not limited to saws. I can't think of a car or motorbike dealer, or any kind of dealer where you can drop by just to say hey like that. Used to be some 20 years ago, not no more though.

Randy, you could put an 84" bar on one of 'em, it will hold down about 600 beers and people will avoid direct-eye contact with it! My local hippies will grimace at a 3 or 4 ft bar on a saw in my truck, when all I'm doing is cutting carpenter ant hollowed-out, or bark beetle infested worthless shat trees. It's funny how the will to hug a tree goes away when you knock the bark off and there are bats sleeping under there, or you cut into one and ants or hornets are spraying everywhere. Still, out of respect, I leave them right where they lay in case any of these fruitloops want five minutes alone.

Total tools in Geelong sell base model saws and a couple of trimmers.

There is a very very good Stihl dealer in Winchelsea (between Geelong and Colac) :D

whew! that does suck. twin cities close to where i live 100,000+ population, about 15 miles, has 5 dealers, 2 of which are elite, and one elite dealer in my small town of 2,000.....4.5 million and no stihl dealer, i'd be going thru withdrawl....:msp_scared:

This certainly opens up the legitimacy of going overseas to buy your pro grade Stihl chainsaw. I've been lucky, and have been assisted here on the forum into a Stihl chainsaw that is suited to what I want to do with it. I'll post details and pictures once I have finalised the deal.

As mentioned above the only Stihl shops I know of are Narellan, Penrith, and Seven Hills. I think there is one at Londonderry too. I never went to the one in the Blue Mountains but it must have been a laugh.

GYC stocks of Husky equipment isnt that great, but the local Sydney Tools which is 5 minutes from where I work has a lot of Husky equipment.

There is only one more chainsaw that I will consider buying in the future, and that is a MS241CM. I'll look at that one once the McCulloch dies, or one of the vital pieces of plastic falls off. Due to the fact this saw is not available in the US, and I have limited contacts in the UK, this one may end up being a local purchase.

FYI Rylstone (where I was last weekend) has a Stihl shop. I think the population there is in the hundreds.

Regards
Graham.

That doesn't make any sense.

Our whole country has 2 mil population (lol, right?), and we have about a half a milion Stihl dealers. Or Husky dealers that carry (or can order) Stihl parts.

Anyways, if there is no good stihl dealer in a city with 4 mil population, this might be a good time to create one. :)

Shaun, per the 2011 census there's only one city in the US with a population over 4.5.

1. New York City--8, 255,000.
2. Los Angeles--3, 820, 000.

My Makita came from Sydney tools, cheap cheap cheap! I havent yet seen Stihls in box stores here in Melbourne, plenty of large Stihl dealers in my area too, been good to deal with getting in some trimmer parts for me.
