Yep, sure are.

Houston, we have a problem!!!

Hope there is an explanation for all this crazy talk. Seems liability is the lazy man's excuse to not do stuff. You can sell a chainsaw to anyone but can not spin a chain??? Glad I have a dealer that can make a chain!!! I feel for ya brother, like getting a new Harley for Christmas but no gas to fire it up!!! Too much liability, thanks to all you money hunger jack leg lawyers!!!

My 28" Light bar is 27" from the front of the stud slot to the tip of the bar.
91DL 3/8" chain. The chain is tight with the adjustment pin not quite half way through it's full travel....on an old 046.

The distance from the center of the crank to the center of the forward bar stud is 90mm. What is it on the 461?

Tony

Edited to add - With the adjustment pin all the way forward, it measures 3.25" back to the center of the crank.

Wouldnt need the jack leg lawyers if ppl werent always trying to make a easy buck but thats just my 2 cents. There probally has been ppl running store made chains and they have came apart on them and the first thing im sure they thought of is sue sue sue. I guess on a shops stand point it would be classified as "cya". Most of the time it would be covered as operator error. But like I said jmho.

my oregon bar says 106 dl on it ,but i have to run 105 dl on my stihl saws ,on my husky 106 dl fits ,105 fits the husky too but some wrestling getting on due to being too tight,on my 28 stihl es bar 91 dl fits my 440 and 460 ,havent tried the 461 yet

OK, on the 461, it's 3-5/8" (about 92mm) from the crank center to the center of the forward stud. It's 2-1/4" from crank center to the center of the rear stud.

With the tensioner all the way forward, the pin center is 3-1/4" from the crank center.

So these measurements are almost identical to the 046. Which would make you think there are no problems. :confused2:

I have to run out to get ready for night fishing (stripers!) but will do some more measurements/checks tomorrow. At this point, I am beginning to question my sanity, but I checked and re-checked the 28" mount numerous times last night, and no dice. There's no mistaking how loose the chain was.

It's obvious in the pics that the adjuster on the 461 isn't milled as closed to the end of the case as the 261. I believe Mastermind has a 461 in his shop right now. I would get with him and see if he would be willing to post a pic of the adjuster and see if you didn't get a saw that was a factory defect.

I'll check it out later.......I'm getting out of the shop for a few hours.....

I still wonder if you actually have counted the dl of that chain, as too many dl seems like the most likely cause here......:msp_confused:

Whoa there Nellie. Striper fishing is definitely more important than saw'n, except'n stripers won't keep you warm on a cold night in January!

You got me wondering about your sanity also. :)

When the 28" b/c was all mounted up, the chain drivers were settled into the rim sprocket?
Don't even need the bar cover on for it to snug up pretty close.

Good luck and tight lines!

sometimes, that is EXACTLY what we all need. Glad to see you getting out!

on the saw issue.... We always had atleast a chain a day being shortened this summer! Theyd buy a new chain (long one!) and theyd bring it back in a week, and say they couldnt tighten it. so, wed cut a link. or two...the most was 3.

Long story short, i think you need to count the DL a few times. and Then you could be SURE its the bar, or saw. if you want, take the grinder, and get the DL out yourself.

Yesterday I watched a 32" b/c put on a 461 than ran in Woolley and the b/c was just pulled off the shelf at the saw shop

No way would I be able to individually count to 91 drive links. I'd lose interest at 66 or so and reach for my beer, and it would be all over but the belching. Interested to see how it turns out. ;)

Hey, speaking of that, sounds like beer:30 to me! :D :D

The liability was just a line to covreup the fact they don't have the proper tools, plus it costs more money up front for a reel of chain. Fact is these dealers should be ashamed of themselves.

Im sure he would rather been in the shop. It was chilly up at his shop this morning when I was there, and I think he and Jon are digging up a water line for a family member (manually) this afternoon.

You don't individually count drive links!

I do, every time I spin a chain. Three times. Not making that mistake again.

really? ive always lined up the drivers evenly and counted one side (if its an odd number of drive links - line up one end and count the even drivers and add 1) and then multiply X2

And i spin A LOT of chain! so i guess im pretty comftorble with it

Even with the chain guide Oregon supplies, I still check three times. It's a habit I started after screwing up a couple of chains, especially the stupid 91/92/93 DL hoo-hah between different manufacturers for 28" bars.
