3700

You were dead right again.

I put a carb kit in my $20 3700 and got her fired up today. I tried it with a 16" bar and buried it in round. This saw cuts really well. I still need to get a few small parts for it and do a muffler mod but I think this is the best $20 I've spent in a long time.
The saw is mostly yellow as there is very little Poulan green left on it. I am assuming since I've seen three Poulan saws of this series up here that were factory painted over that it was originally for a Canadian Tire branded saw. I don't think Canadian Tire ever carried a 3700 variant so I'm guessing the mag parts were destined for a 3400.

3400's are currently going real cheap on Ebay. See alot for no more than $75. Better to keep them at that price.

My day got a whole light brighter when the mail man brought this today.:msp_smile: NOS 5200 piston/cyl kit. Was funny, there was a wadded up piece of yellowed newspaper inside the piston, dated 2/8/1987. So I guess it has spent the last 25 years in that box. Better than sitting 25 years inside an unused saw in damp barn. Looks fantastic compared to that mess on my project saw.!!!

Nice find Gregg. Doing the one on the 8500 reminded me of what a PITA it is to put that piston on if you dont use a couple tricks.

Definatly hang the piston on the rod before you put the crank in the case, you will thank me later.

Get a dowl rod or something just smaller then the wrist pin and put it through the piston, thrust washers rod brg and rod to hold all that stuff in line.

Put the pin keeper on the back side of the piston, then heat the piston before trying to push the pin in.

Thanks for that advice Mark! I have been thinking something along those line to get the piston back together. Was thinking it would be darn near impossible with rod installed in the case. Trying to line all that up. I like the dowel rod idea. And about three hands, a pair of needle nose pliars, propane torch, a c-clamp, couple of High Lifes to calm the nerves after. Or maybe before!

Greg, that is a nice find, and to think it has been sitting there waiting for you for 25 years. Please detail the piston fitting proceedures with pics for the weak of mind like me!

Hey, I had a great day too. Got in a real dirty 3800 which is actually a very low hour saw but filthy. I pulled the muff just now and I see a perfect aluminium piston and thin rings! Oh boy, I think I have snagged a 3700. My PP375 has thick rings and a chrome piston. Poulan sure did some funny things. Pics to follow.

Put new rings on my 5200 a few years back. That would have been very valuable information at the time.

I usually leave the piston on the rod when changing out rings. I guess I am lazy but I hate creating extra work.

OK, I know it is a dirty saw but that is a thin ring piston in there. I don't know much about them but I thought 3800's had plated pistons with thick rings. Am I right in thinking this is a 3700? And was it really made in Canada?

Sure is a chrome bore thin ring saw! I know the 3800 I just got is the thick ring/chrome piston. Maybe an early one with a 3700 top end. Either way, thats awesome!

Al, Id check the bore and starter assembly on that saw cause you have a 4000 style muffler too.....

You guys are lucky enough to be able to use your saws when you want. I have to go to Vermont to use my saws and that's only using the saws I have up there. I've decided to let go of models where I have multiple saws cause I'll never use them here. :msp_mad:
