Full skip chain???

What do you guys think about running a full skip full chisel on a 20 inch 3/8 ms 290 farm boss?

Caint see the need for it but you can try anything once. I really only run skips on larger bars.

No issue with it , will cut a little faster and a helluva lot easier to sharpen, use it all the time on a 24" set up on a 044,441cm and 460.

I've used a number of skip chains and here are the ones that I have right now RSLHK; RSLFK; 72JGX and Carlton skip chain (I couldn't read the numbers on the box) in .375 and .325

Personally I like the RSLHK better than the others I have used on 20", 24"; 25" and 28" bar's

I even have a skip chain for one of my MS 250's with a 18" b/c just to see what it's like :msp_wink: and I would use it again :msp_smile:

The reason I tired so many is what I read here but the winner in my mind was the chains that the local loggers here in the PNW told me to use in the first place :msp_smile:

I cut with several Amish guys that ran skip on 20" 290's and a Husky 55.

They like it because there are fewer cutters to file, and they can "Lean on it" better...which was kinda troubling for me to argue with, so I shut up. They do things different.

I run skip on the 24" on the 372 all the time. It saves on file time, but is slower with a 7 Pin. 8 pin and it's just the ticket!

Nothing wrong with skip on shorter bars but it's not really needed.
I've run it on ported 7900's on a 20" bar to give it a go and I was actually pleasantly surprised. If all I had was skip I wouldn't have any concerns running it.

Skip is better for high chain speed, which you can't get with that 290. I switched from 3/8" to .325" and 20" bar on mine and it cut really good! Someone else said they use that skip setup with an MS 361 and 8t sprocket, which would work really good.
Myself, I think it's better to keep the chain speed lower = less wear, unless you want to race.

Funny, ask about a 20" bar on an ms290, and most on here will say its too much for a 290.

I have a 290 with a 20" running .325 full skip. In hardwood bigger than 15" it cuts better than full comp on that saw. Results should be similar with 3/8. Haven't tried it, but semi-skip should work fine too.

Funnily enough I ran an 029 with a 32" bar a while back that had 50% of the cutters removed. It wouldn't win any races but it did get a mate out of a pinch when the odd larger tree fell over access tracks on his property.

I tried it for the first time yeterday on a PP365 with a 22" bar and really liked the way it cut on a big hedge tree.I plan on trying it out on a 24" bar on my Poulan 4000.

Funnily enough I ran an 029 with a 32" bar a while back that had 50% of the cutters removed. It wouldn't win any races but it did get a mate out of a pinch when the odd larger tree fell over access tracks on his property.

Wouldn't removing half the cutters leave only one side (left or right) cutters? Good for curved trees i guess.

I have an 18 with 3/8 skip on my closed port 55, for limbing it's a little grabby but it is great for bucking small hardwood up to 16 inch. I only tried it because I had a piece left off a roll that just fit but I like it more than I thought I would.

Yup. I am doomed. Being as you are a genuine PRO faller, you'll probably have some kind of super duper real genuine Pro Faller square ultra skip speed highly oiled chain and use your vast knowledge of bucking secrets and reading the grain of the wood, and then port your saw, to win.

I might have to cry or something afterwards. Good Ol' Sparkless....
