The oldest saw I own is from the 80's and it runs on the same premium mixture of all saws.

If you want a thick mix - maybe 35-to-1 if you wish to exaggerate, or 40-to-1 .. .



but if your chainsaw loses power and dies on ya -- first: clean the air intake system , and the fuel tank ventilation. If the last one is clogged - the engine will pump some fuel for a short period until it can no longer resist the vaccum in the fuel-tank since the vent there is shut and no air is allowed in to balance the pressure..

Check your compression first and then remove your muffler and see if you have carbon buildup on exhaust ports, clean if nessicary, maybe a plugged up muffler. also look at piston and cylinder for scoring. check piston ring for movement, it may also be seizzzed . this es all easy to check once you remove muffler.

I just tried it and it with out the air filter and it ran very good but with the air filter it doesn't like to run. Could the fuel pump diagram just be bad it looked old last time I looked in the carb or could it be 1-2 year old 20-1 gas? And last time I checked compression and piston the comp was 140 and the piston doesn't have any scratches or scuffs and the muffler is clean because there is nothing inside it

Scoring on another saw

I know you guys might despise me but I have a poulan 2000 with tons of scrapes scoring and an air leak but it still runs but not really well

140psi is OK to run. You say engine is clean..
Still -- 20 to 1 mix ratio is too thick.. hard to run like that, and much carbon will add up quicker and make things go bad..
you don't want that.

Grab the air filter ALONE - and wash it with warm soapy water (plain dishes soap, not harsh chemicals!!!!)
when done - dry it with pressurized air if you have, but in the opposite direction of the air flow of the engine filtration system

If you don't have any method to dry it fast, and this air filter has a steel mesh in it - you might wanna replace it since it could maybe rust.. dunnow.. just replace if you can find it for cheap..

And remember to clean the fuel-tank vent

Sounds to me like you have isolated your problem to the air filter, clean or replace it. l would put some fresh fuel in otherwise risk seizzzzzzzing the piston /cylinder cause of ethonel in gas separateing the fuel mix .
l always shake my saw a little after it has been sitting for 30 days or so just to make sure the gas and oil are mixed to gether.
Your fuel inlet screenwhich is under your fuel pump dia maybe also needs cleaning or replacing.
 
Might hav found it

Found the fuel filter on the bottom of the tank and the fuel line above the fuel I put a zip tie on it but will have to wait for tomorrow to get a video because the neighbors are angry

plus:

by spilling old fuel-mixture you won't lose much, if any..
you can collect old fuel to a little seal-able can, and use it for cleaning parts..
it's more expensive (more depressing IMO) to burn your engine.

Fuel

Yea I did do all of above but I dumped the gas on a nasty log in the fire pit and lit it on fire the new mix is 110 octane race gas I had from les then 30 days ago and mixed 40-1 gas and shaked it before I gassed my saw up but now the saw runs well but I need to tune it for the new gas I used

nice ratio for such a super-high octane fuel.. maybe it's better this way with 110 gasoline..

anyway, don't run it too lean, nor too rich..

How expensive it is

I think it's like 8 dollars a gallon for vp turbo blue race fuel but even if you have the money you have to find a distributer that sells the fuel

Dug out this old thing today
to play with'..

165 lbs comp,hope that is good.
has spark.
fuel line in pieces,carb all varnish.found the fuel filter and cleaned it and replaced fuel line.
ordered a carb kit.

was filthy but a wipe down shows it may be pretty nice underneath.

Need a plastic grill around the starter,anybody got an extra ??

tried a couple more turns on starter rope to tighten it up but no Joy..
that area is stihl so feelthy it needs to come apart..
it seems i remember something about them,,,been awhile but i seem to remember to NOT take the starter apart !! LOL !!
any suggestion to cut down on the pain ???

I found that 40:1 with 92 octane alki gas was running my saws lean so I switched to 32:1. With the modern 2 stroke oil there is less carbon deposits than when regular Dino oil is used. I would never go back to 40:1 as long as they put ethanol in gasoline.

Make sure you release all the tension on the spring before you remove the pulley and wiggle if it a bit to make sure the end of the spring is disconnected from the pulley. Just in case, make sure you wear eye protection.
