Rudi, the 2.5 5 cylinder (TD5) takes to mods like, well, no I won't go there...
Put it this way, fit a VNT, install a big I/C, reprogramme the 'puter with a map from the right company and you can have a fire breathing little jigger that will still get decent fuel economy.
They are a bloody efficient engine.
The 4 cylinder like mine can be adjusted really easily, I just have a 3" exhaust, bigger inlet pipe between the snorkel and air cleaner and the fuel turned up and with 5-600kg in the back our empty Patrol doesn't see which way it went, but the TD42T in the Patrol is a slug (stock) too.
Mostly the engines are pretty reliable, but the engine of choice is the old Isuzu 4BD1T as fitted to the Army 6x6's, absolutely bulletproof, but the torque pulses destroy the drivetrain eventually.
Almost 1litre/cylinder is just a little too much unless you fit a heavy truck flywheel, but they are one hell of an engine, and if you have the $ to setup the rest of the drivetrain to cope, you can just wind the boost and fuel up and nothing will touch you on or offroad.
With my engine set the way it is, carrying that load, 33.5" muddies, bull bar and crap on the roof it gets 11.5-11.8l/100km day in, day out and I sit on 110km/h on the h/way.
It has seen 10l/100km empty on a trip, but that was the exception.
A lot of Rover blokes reckon they get better than that but I seriously question their numbers, or they're driving like Nana everywhere.
Or if you want reliable you grab a Troopy with the 1HD-FTE engine, a back brace and the phone number of a good chiro
