Rudi, the 2.5 5 cylinder (TD5) takes to mods like, well, no I won't go there...

Put it this way, fit a VNT, install a big I/C, reprogramme the 'puter with a map from the right company and you can have a fire breathing little jigger that will still get decent fuel economy.
They are a bloody efficient engine.

The 4 cylinder like mine can be adjusted really easily, I just have a 3" exhaust, bigger inlet pipe between the snorkel and air cleaner and the fuel turned up and with 5-600kg in the back our empty Patrol doesn't see which way it went, but the TD42T in the Patrol is a slug (stock) too.
Mostly the engines are pretty reliable, but the engine of choice is the old Isuzu 4BD1T as fitted to the Army 6x6's, absolutely bulletproof, but the torque pulses destroy the drivetrain eventually.
Almost 1litre/cylinder is just a little too much unless you fit a heavy truck flywheel, but they are one hell of an engine, and if you have the $ to setup the rest of the drivetrain to cope, you can just wind the boost and fuel up and nothing will touch you on or offroad.

With my engine set the way it is, carrying that load, 33.5" muddies, bull bar and crap on the roof it gets 11.5-11.8l/100km day in, day out and I sit on 110km/h on the h/way.
It has seen 10l/100km empty on a trip, but that was the exception.
A lot of Rover blokes reckon they get better than that but I seriously question their numbers, or they're driving like Nana everywhere.

Or if you want reliable you grab a Troopy with the 1HD-FTE engine, a back brace and the phone number of a good chiro :D

Awe I dunno Rick. I reckon an R35 Nissan GTR might keep up onroad. Maybe...
As far as the army 6x6 Landies go they are indeed tough. The SAS in Afghanistan found that the only thing that could put them out of action was an anti tank mine...

Matt have you got them chainsaw pants yet.?

The Stihl ones mate?
If so yes I have. They are absolutely awesome. Thin, relatively cool, and bloody comfortable. Tough too and no rips despite giving them a fair workout.
Only issue I've had (if you can call it that?) is that they are so thin they don't really offer your legs much protection from bits of wood flying off the chain. My right thigh copped a hiding doing those smaller Casuarinas as when I was madly limbing out the bottoms, especially with the 550XP and 8 pin rim, any bits of branch it grabbed with the chain were shot into my legs like a javelin.
I ended up with some ripper bruises but at least I didn't die of heat stress like when I was wearing those crappy Foresters. Well worth the few hundred bucks. One thing you can't deny is that Stihl accessories are the best by far, regardless of which saw brand you prefer. Always quality gear.

An R35 GTR isn't what I really had in mind as a 4WD to compare to :D

Nice thought, though.

A bloke in the US setup an Isuzu 4BD1T with compound turbo's, boost at I think nearly 50psi, obviously rebuilt pump and injectors and fitted it to his F100.
The head, head gasket and bottom end were all stock Isuzu. :jawdrop:
He has vids on YouTube, went under the name of CarCrafter.

Thanks for the info Rick, I'll do some more reading.

Re: pants. I ended up getting some clogger ones from NZ and they are light and comfy too, nothing like wearing the old style chaps.

And and they are figure hugging also, for those big jobs and stuff... :msp_ohmy:

For some eye glazing reading, go here Australian Land Rover Owners
Join up if you have any Q's, mostly a pretty good bunch if you can look past some of the partisanship, but mostly a pretty objective bunch, although some of us are a tad more objective than others :D

A stray Dog followed me home...

What's a fella to do ?

He just jumped in the back of the Landy after sitting forlorn and neglected in the back corner of a shed for years.

The dogs master has gone MIA, moved with no forwarding address ("Clancy's gone to Queensland droving and we don't know where he are...") and left his last remaining dog in the care of a mate who's sheltered it for three years now.

Said mate suggested I take him home, give him a feed and see if I like him.

It was for sale once upon a time, had the sign hung form its collar in this very place but no one was interested, all the locals wanted were its older step brothers from a German father and I just didn't have the cash at the time, and as time went on I forgot all about the hard working dog.
Its done a fair bit of work in Qld in it's time and so I opened its mouth and checked it's teeth, found a few things that the vet will have to tidy up but we'll give it a feed and see if it still has the goods, then try and locate the owner and make a fair offer.

Anyway, here's a few happy snaps.
The poor bugger is in a further state of undress after these were taken, the carby, insulating block, etc are all off now.
I know, I can't help myself.

All you had to say was that you found an old 3120. I had a tear in my eye reading through it all then I punched the wall and sank a bottle of Bourbon when I realised it was all dramatised for effect...
