What do you guys think is the best splitter for the money under 1600 bucks. I was looking at the arien brand or the husky ones. What do yu guys think. I would rather have at least 27 ton but would 20 to 22 ton be enough for hard wood size wood 16" long by up to 24 to 30 " trees. I would be splitting under 10 cord a year. Then once I get ahead a few years just be splitting about 4 cord a year.

Is the speeco 35 ton with the b/s 1450 a good splitter

22 ton for me is all I ever need, it's happy to bust up 4' rounds on the ground and split all day with the rarest of fails.
Get yourself a vertical/horizontal one and you will never have to noodle again.
Get one with a Honda engine, just more reliable and great cold starts.

MrWhoopee,

I have an electric splitter and it's nice to use when the wood isn't to gigantic or nasty.
I can split more on it than on the 22t gas version and it's nice and quiet when the night before was loud LOL

Mine gets loaned out so many times I forget who has it some times.
Then I remember call them and tell them to bring my hangover recover tool back :)

In my opinion don't buy just an ADEQUATE sized splitter. Get the 35 ton and you really don't ever have to worry about how big or how twisted the wood is.
It's tough to beat the Huskee/speeco or this new DHT might be a good one.

Look for a good used one. It took me a year of watching craigslist but I finally nabbed up a like new Huskee 35 ton for an even $1600. He would have taken $1500 but I talked him into delivering it.
This thing didn't even have the paint worn off the wedge. Saved me about $450 from a new one with tax.

I have a 28 ton Speeco, splits everything I have put on it and I've put some nasty crap on it. Sounds like you don't need much more but it would get depend on your wood. I've never put elm on mine because I don't have any. Woods I've split are cherry, ironwood, ash, maple, apple, pine, spruce, and poplar. Not real tough wood but there was some nasty twisted stuff in the mix. Mine has a briggs on it and isn't bad on fuel, small tank gives me a rest when I need it and stops me when it's too dark out to keep working. To me bigger usually means more fuel useage and if you don't need it then why fuel up more. If you get a tough one then just work your way around it if you have to.

this one looks nice, plus the rep member here is quite open to constructive criticism.

I have zero first hand knowledge for running anything but the big home made one here however.

with that said, so far, factory models I have seen here, I still like whitespiders logboss the best. One hand moving around, plenty strong, ability to adjust the beam and ram around hugemongous rounds right where they sit....

I just saw brand new speeco 35 ton with b/s 1450 motor for just under 1700 free shipping

I agree these seem to be very nice and I did check one out locally I am considering it as a second unit.

They look like i decent splitter for the money but Im in nj and TSC doesnt have them or even heard of DHT.

I just pasted up on about 4 cords of white oak because everthing was about 30" plus and with a bad back and no big spliter to hard for me to deal with. I want to get a decent spliter and put a crane swivel like lift on it to pick up the big pieces. It killed me to let wood like that go.I would of rented a splitter but i cant work fast because of my back and 70 a day adds up quick. So trying make a setup to help me out cause cant afford to pay the gas and electric man every winter and I have plenty of access to free trees. Thanks for all the info guys

I dont know for sure, but I think you can just order one and have it delivered to your nearest tractor supply. My local store didnt hear of the dirty hand tool splitters yet..and they didnt know they were switching to jonsered over husky before I told them!

The husky 35 ton is about 2000 and the speeco I found that is 35 ton for 1700 free del. Both have briggs on them 1450 model. What do you think is he difference. They look the same

I bought the Ariens 27 ton last June and last Novenber I broke the coupler between the piston and controll valve ( my fault ) took it to Ariens certified repair depot........new coupler... no charge. Service is great and no trouble splitting apple and yellow birch which are the toughest species I have to split......
It sat outside all winter covered in plastic and it started this spring on 1 pull. It pulls nice behind the ATV and is made in the USA. Good Luck

I was looking at the Ariens 27 ton but I just dont no if its worth it or not to spend the 1700 for the speeco 35 ton. PLus the speeco says its a 14 second split time vs. 20s with the ariens. Im not working fast but that is the 2 IM torn between. How is the work height on the ariens. Im 6 3" so dont want to be hunched over

I know the cycle time is big for some folks, but its relative. If I have some shorter stuff to split, I can stop the ram short of full retraction. I've found also that while the ram is retracting I'm getting the other piece to split in place. So the speed of the ram has been negligible the way I work. Me using the 22 T Huskee has made me want a little larger one for some of the grung I throw on it. I would like to see the mangy stuff split without the ram getting into such a grunt stage. I suppose one of the larger ones is down the road for me.
