I picked up a low hour Dolmar 510 and it's having problems at idle. The fuel tank was empty when I bought it and I believe it had sit for a long time. The fuel line appears ok but I have not changed it. The fuel filter looks like new. Plenty of compression. The first time I took the carb off, there was water on the fuel pump side. No corrosion in the carb and it was clean other than the water. The piston looks like new from the intake side. This saw runs excellent at top end and pulls a 64 DL 3/8 with no problem in hedge. I've ran two tanks through it now and it's still very inconsistent on idle. It leans out, increases in RPM, then dies. I have to choke it to get it running again, even when hot. If it dies while I'm holding it, I can quickly give it full throttle and it usually starts the first pull without the choke, (the saw is warmed up). I cut the limiters and fattened up the low, increased the idle. Throttle response is excellent now. Are there any known issues with these saws such as carb problems or air leaks? I read the 5100 may spin the crank bearing, but did that happen on the 510?

Does the low side respond at all to your adjustments?

Is there any corellation between fuel tank level and whne it does this?

I have a 5100S I about pulled my hair out on with the low side not responding and ended up putting a different carb on it and it has been a fantastic runner since

Yes, the low side absolutely responds to adjustment. There is about 3/8 to 1/2 turn between so lean to die and to rich to die. I've got in on the rich side with the idle increased. No relationship to the fuel tank level, it'll mess with me from full tank to empty. Is there a better carb to put on these? That's what I think it needs, but I wanted to get some feedback here and see if there are other common problems.

It sounds like it could be an air leak possibly. I know the early saws didn't have an intake boot sealing ring, they all leaked air where the carb seals against the boot on the 5100s's (Im assuming the 510 is the same, some one correct me if im wrong)
Sawtroll mentioned they added the sealing ring around nov 2006. What year is your saw?
You might check into this before buying a new carb...

Where do I look for the year? The labels near the handle are scratched up. I saw a spring looking clamp around the intake boot.

On the earlier ones (If I remember right pre 2010) the first 2 numbers of the serial number represent the year, the later ones the first four are the year.
Here is what you are looking for, its the part #63

Ok, I thought you were talking about item 44. I'll take the carb back off and see if the insert is in there.

Yours is scratched off. It should look this on the top sticker.
DOLMAR PS-510
..............xxxxxxxxx

The serial number should be where I inserted the X's.
Can you make out the first 2 numbers?

Looks like 0417

2004 maybe? I dont know when that saw came into production.

It looks like that boot ring might just fix your issue!!!:) I hope it does!!! Im betting it will, I just diagnosed a saw tonight with the SAME issue in the same spot!
I HATE air leaks for more than one reason!!

I just made a small window where my pictures were located. Then, I drug and dropped them where you normally type a message. After you drop the ones you want, it gives the option of full size or thumbnail. This time I picked thumbnail and let's see what that does. This is what the 510 did to the original chain today, of course right after I sharpened it and knocked the rakers down.DSC03754.JPG DSC03755.JPG

Lets see what this does???????????
Do you have the original pictures on your computer or device that you are posting with? If you are using photo bucket, you will probably have to create a url and click the image button to the right of the smily face. That will pop a window to enter the address for the photo in photo bucket. This is a guess, I haven't tried it.

There is something else that helps these saws. You need to delete the crappy carb compensation Dolmar used. They have a solid foam disk instead of the doughnut, it covers the hole you see in the top of the carb, that's the metering side of the carb. This improves idle stability greatly. Also make sure the fuel line where it enters the tank hasn't rotated, this will cause the line to pinch bestrewn the carb box and the tank handle. I've had that issue several times.
