Yeah, i just spent 10 min on the phone with a customer service guy ay Husqavarna. He tried but said most likely all of those old records were destroyed.
I'll have to look for more clues.
Ahhh found very nice clue. Product registration card had a may 1992 date!
Therefore probably not much newer than that.
I think I am done!

Need help with figuring a manufacture date from a serial number.
Picked up a "new in the box" older Poulan 1800 woodsman over the weekend. Has an Ansi date of 1991 so that is the oldest it could be. Serial number is 1L279E484. Mike acres says started making 1982 but no ending date.

Hey all, I'm picking up my first Poulan today. My father in law and brother in law both have a couple Poulan's and really like them (5400 and 8500). I found a good shape
3400 counter vibe and I'll be picking it up this afternoon.
My question is, I've been reading stuff on here about muffler mods and from the sounds of it, the 3400 can really benefit from this. I've never done one and I don't have a welder. I do
have some tools to cut holes and cut metal though. Is there an easy muffler mod to do without having to weld anything or is there a muffler from another Poulan model that breathes
better that will fit the 3400? Thanks in advance, looking forward to my first Poulan.

Take a look at my first post here

I took out the muffler screen, drilled out the front to back baffle so free flowing top to bottom and did a slit type of opening in the side of the muffler so it looked stock. I tried to make that opening about 2/3 's of the exhaust opening just to be safe. Here's what I have read "Rule of thumb for modding mufflers is for your outlet to be about 10 to 20 % smaller than the opening of the exhaust port on the cylinder side." I really do not try to go that far because I'll end up opening it too much. That way with the 33% I have room for error. For a muffler that does not already have an opening - there should be pleasant difference.

Thanks Mark, I've never modded a muffler before so pics and descriptions help! Then I'm assuming there's going to be some carb adjustment to get it to run correctly right?

Here's a common one. Easy to do. Just cut a slit in the side of the muffler with a dremel and heat the area around it with a propane torch and bend into shape with a large slot screwdriver.
Take the diffuser out of the muffler and drill the 1/4" holes out to 5/16" or 3/8". Make sure you clean all the metal dust out of the muffler so it doesn't end up in the cylinder.
I find backing the area you are going to pry on is best backed up with a piece of hardwood to prevent distorting the side of the muffler body. This mod copies the muffler outlet on a Poulan 4000.

Awesome thanks Tim. That looks pretty good too. You guys running 50:1 or 40:1 in these older Poulans? I'm running 40:1 in my older Stihls.

+1

In addition to the backing perhaps a small strip of flat steel on the exterior to pry down onto and up against the slot. No chance of any distortion and a pivot point that helps to keep the tip of the driver flat against the slot while you shape it.

If you are anything like me your first Poulan will turn into 5 or 10 in a couple of months. They seem to spawn in the shop.

So much fun!

Here's the link to the 3400 manual.

As noted on page 20 of the manual- most older saws will start out with 1 turn out on both high and low. The additional card adjustment will depend on when it 4 strokes just a bit out of wood and cleans itself up when in the wood. I think my one saw to an additional 1/16 turn out after a muff mod. This is one of the best carb adjusting videos that I found. It really explains a lot.

I have a PP3516A AVX that I have been asked to look at. No oil coming out for the bar. I see two hoses in the tank so I think it must pressurize the tank some how. Where does the open hose go to and where might the problem be on this type saw? Thanks

The best I can do is a link to the manual. Unless I can pick one of the new saws up for near nothing, get running and resale for a profit I try to stay away from them.

I love it when folks ask me if I take poulans in trade. You just never know what you might get. One time was a poulan pro 325 and a badboy 3750.

Yesterday just 295 260.
