Project 084 Nears completion

I've been working on an 084 project saw for a while. I bought one that was pretty rough, but the piston and cylinder were in great shape. Found another donor parts saw along the ways. I ended up using this case as I found a few stripped holes in the other one, So here are some pics of what I started with....

Well, Here are some of the better pics.. I sanded down the case and the covers. I had to do a little JB weld to the clutch cover as both the ones I had had some pretty bad breaks and cracks in them. This was painted using the Stihl Grey paint

Steve, How do you get your project saws so clean before working on them. I have been working on another 5000 plus and it is covered in 1/8 inch of pine sap wood dust etc. It is hardened to where it takes a scraper to remove it, but I dont want to scratch up the paint and dont want the stickers coming off. Ideas?

I use a pressure washer and some differant cleaners. The hot water and high pressure work good. I try to soak them for a couple hours to help loosen the grime

Didnt know you was going to post a book. So F@$% you bud. :jawdrop: LOL. Thanks for the info. You never have had prob with water getting in a seal from the pressure.
I will go delete the in between one.

I ordered some more parts the other day..

I got a new top cover, HD air filter cover, the decal plate for the starter cover, and all the rubber lines, bushings, etc

Is that the off white-grey stihl paint? Looks real grey in the pics. Thought about the 066 RL for a touch up, but looks like a scarred warrior the way it sits.

Steve, you have any problems with gas dissolving that Stihl paint? The one and only time I used it it happen to me.

Can that paint be baked?

Nice work Steve. I like to do work like that but usually get too impatient for the "pretty" stuff.

I always bake it... 225f for about 30 minutes... in a convection oven - not radient heat, or a month in the green house... Once it's hard and really dry, it's reasonably gas resistant.

This is still not fully assembled, so I can't answer that, But Lakeside recommends baking the paint otherwise it really soft for about a month.

I set these parts infront of a radiant heater for about 2 days and then they sat by the stove for a few more days.

The more heat you can get, the better it dries and sticks....

Nope, but at least my garage didn't have a mishap with Talon and a tree removal......

IVe got a couple of 066's that i bought the paint for and I have not got them clean enough yet,,, good Idea with the steam cleaner,,,, did you take it all the way down to clean metal or did you just feather back the edges to where the paint was still stuck good??????

That was God's way of giving me a new garage and paint jobs. Thank God for 100mph winds.:hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2: Even bought the wife a new Monte with all the insurance money. Like I say, everything happens for a reason.
At the time it looked and smelled like poop. But boy it sure smells good now.
