50:1 isn't enough, and 32:1 is more than i need, so i mix 40:1.[emoji4]

I have seen dozens of saws that have run 50:1 and have had no ill effects. Now these are home owner and pro saw users in the EU. Combined thousands and thousands of hours. My personal saw I used in Germany was bought new in 1993 and failed just this year after many many many tanks of 50:1 gas due to foreign matter ingestion. As has been pointed out a great many times use a good oil, good fuel and you are all set. I have yet to hear of a oil related failure due to e free gas and 50:1 mix. 100:1 ? why take the chance and why be so cheap? Much like running motor oil as bar and chain lube? Madness:crazy2:

Im all for people using whatever they are comfortable with and what there application calls for. DD pretty much nailed it i think. Seems to me for what i do, 50:1 keeps things oiled well without loads of buildup on piston/exhaust port. I read ol' klemm's article and trying to compare 250cc desert racing dirtbikes to a firewooder's chainsaw is a bit out there for me.

With all due respect, I have to disagree that a 2-stroke 250 racing machine is not comparable to a saw. Besides both being 2-stroke, they are quit similar as far as how they are run in that sustained max RPM running is very commonplace. Bigger engines, yes. But I contend that the information contained in that article is actually quite relevant to power saws.

FTR, I run my saws at the ratio recommended by the manufacturer, and use their oil too. I figure they know the requirements of their (stock) equipment, probably better than any of us. And they certainly aren't going to chance a ratio recommendation that could cause them to lose their rears on warranty replacements due to too numerically high of a premix ratio.

i would use oem oil in my saw but 2.99 per bottle that only makes 1 gallon then the 5 gallon mix is 9.99 per bottle no way.

I guess i should say i dont run my saws like desert racing dirtbikes. If its anywhere near 80 degrees, you will have to REALLY pay me to do any amount of sawing. Most guys dont cut wood that requires cuts longer than a minute or two at most. Those rally bikers will be at full throttle for potentially miles at a time in over 100*F heat. All im trying to get at is that one needs to understand their application. 32:1 is overkill for probably 95% of chainsaw owners. for johnny woodcutter 50:1 will work great for a long long long time. If youve got $1200 into your ported ms660 or whatever then yes run lots of oil. Chainsaw milling in texas? yep run more oil.

Dirt bike racing seldom sees sustained full throttle operation for miles. In fact depending on the type of race, operating conditions are alot like a saw. A saw probaly sees more sustained full throttle operation.
I would absolutley not run 50:1 in a strato saw or if I was milling.

Stihl ultra wooohooo ya babby! Yep stirring the pot. Lol

Well i cant stand ultra i find it to be really offensive at a distance and will about make me puke if im running it. I must say i absolutely love the smell of 2 cycle exhaust enough to start a saw or whip when i dont need it just to smell it. The amsoil outboard in my ski and the pro in air cooled stuff coats and protects very well. I am still looking but happy also with the oils i run.

The price of ultra makes me wanna puke! $5 for a 2 gal mix. Two of my buddies are amsoil dealers. So I get mine by the quart at there cost.
