Ya know when it's bitter cold like this my family tends to get a renewed appreciation for wood heat . There is nothing like having a mid 70's temperature cozy house on a wicked cold January night when everyone else struggles to keep warm and turns down the thermostat to conserve fuel costs ! I get a great sense of accomplishment knowing I'm not only providing that level of comfort but doing it for free and thumbing my nose at the oil man .because you know these can be very expensive days by using another heat source. I set my thermostat for 77 and its about 10 outside and windy . Why run it so warm ? Because I can!... and its free .house is almost too warm and I may open some windows if I hit 80 or I may not:)

Yep. Owb keeping the house at a steady 74° and built a fire inside mostly for atmosphere. Love me some wood heat. :cheers:IMG_20160104_184134261.jpg

For a very late start in getting cold temps and being warned a week ahead of the cold, It sure surprised when I went outside tonight. BRRRR....

I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it myself...But, my grandpa heated with wood; he had an indoor stove. He loved to pour the coals to that thing. About 35 yrs ago we were at his house for Christmas. He had it so hot in the house that candles (the tall straight ones) got soft enough to bend over; they were about 30-35 feet from the stove. We were all going outside with snow on the ground to cool off. We opened windows and doors. It is a wonder he didn't burn that house down. He loved it too. We would open the doors and he would get more wood.

Good evening guy's, I'm sitting here waiting for the coals to burn down from the cherry I've been burning.
Not complaining though as it's 74 in the house and 13 outside:).
I have a nice 6-7" black locust round and a bunch of 3-4" rounds also locust, I will put on as soon as I finish typing this.
Should keep it nice and toasty in here tonight as they are calling for a low around 8.

14° f here in Ohio this morning. We've been so spoiled so fare this winter with warm temps i feel like a visiter from Florida. Thin blood.

open the windows? cant you just turn down the thermostat??

There ain't nothing like wood heat, especially so when we get very cold weather. I come home from work at night, it's in the low teens outside. Walk in the house, it's in the low 70s. Toasty warm. We could never afford to heat the ol' home place like this with gas, oil or electric.

Watch the oil and LP trucks roll on by and smile. Somebody's gonna get a big fuel delivery bill but it won't be us. :)

Was 3F when I woke up at 3:00AM and got out of bed this morning. A whole 69F in the coldest room of the house at that time. Went down at 4:30 to put more wood in the furnace and it was sill half full. Still loaded it up and opened it up so it would warm to 75.

Talk about likeing heat, that was my POP he was in his mid 70's then. He had a Ashley wood burner in the corner of a 20x20 very well insulated room. He had his recliner about 5 feet away and would be sitting in that recliner wearing long johns, insulated Jeans and a insulated flannel shirt. We would go to visit walk in the house and about pass out from the heat. Mom always kept the door between that room and the rest of the house closed except on the coldest days and during the night when dad was not awake to keep shoveing the wood to it like a old time steam engine. I have seen the inside temp gauge on the wall in dads room at 110F and him drinking scalding hot coffee. Iwas buying 10 full coard loads of wood then just one every summer. Dads house was 400 sq feet smaller and he was buring 20 of those cords of wood during a winter.

:D Al

12 here this morning! We have hardly been near freezing this winter and then, BAM! Talk about a kick in the giggle berries, dogs didn't even want to walk around and sniff. Both of them pee and poop, back inside to eat and now they are curled up around the stove with the cat!
Frig that's cold....We only got the cold snap for about 4 days. Only about 4 inches of snow so far as well. Now we have rain and warm temps on the way for the weekend. Supposed to be 8 degrees above and 20-30mm of rain for Sunday. Weird weather for January, but it keeps my wood and wood pellet consumption low, saves money.
Happy new year to all my wood burning, whittling and milling friends out there!:popcorn2:
