First off I wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Now it seems like 90 % of the used saws I buy have stripped out threads on them. Some have oversized coils in them or no screw at all. On the oversized screws could I JB weld the holes full then drill out and heli coil the right size or would that not hold? Time to buy a good tap and die set.

I use Helicoils .

Timesert or weld it and drill/tap the hole. Did the latter on a transmission once, worked well.

Must be picking up 90% Huskys and 10 % others

JB weld isn't strong enough .

The recoil screws are 4mm by 7 aren't they? I thought most of the screws on the 385s and 390s are that size. Maybe I'm wrong.

Jerry will timeserts fix this?

Just about any hole in solid metal can be Timeserted but not if the metal is completely missing. Can`t see what that top bolt/stud is in with the nut n washer, top cover screw looks loose. I fix them Orange saws with a BFH, one or two baps n they are fixed up good....LOL

i've used some timeserts and they work good. i usually use a heli coil to repair the 5mmx.8mm but will sometimes use a 6mmx1mm tap. i have 4mmx.7mm heli coils as well but i usually just tap it out to 5mmx.8mm as there is almost always enough meat for it. on the husky dawg bolts i have tapped the case to 8mm, threaded/loctited in a bolt, cut clean, and then drill and tap that bolt to 5mmx.8mm as a repair. gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

In the abcents of the BFH, a block of hardwood also works.

If the thread is into plastic a good repair can be made using the threaded inserts for wood in furniture making they have a tapped hole in the centre with an allen socket to enable you to screw them in & a spiky coarse thread on the outside that will bite into the plastic a dab of superglue on fitting the insert keeps them in place they come in various sizes & names looking on E bay under threaded inserts for wood will give you an idea of what they are like.

Thanks Mike. Haven't
built a bottom for that top end you did for me. Maybe the next one.
I think you'll like it. It's the easy start version of that one;) Some of those inserts can be bought off ebay in the bigger thread pitches. I dot some 8x12mm for fixing bar studs

Pioneerguy, what is the advantage of the Timesert over the Helicoil?

helicoils are ok for a saw you're not going to use. otherwise use the more expensive timeserts. they work better and last longer, especially in magneseium. the problem with most saws is you only get one chance. if a helicoil fails you don't have enuff meat left. this is really true for husky top cover screws. timeserts have a larger od than helicoils and often the magnesium is too boogered up to hold a helicoil reliably but a timesert works fine.
