I've got CAD. Bad. But I'm ok with it. And I actually have a need for a variety of saws -- I'm active duty Army and move around a lot, but often end up living somewhere with trees that need felled, bucked, etc. I'd also like to get into milling at some point; probably after I retire in a few years.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of vintage Stihl saws. I have an 070 (and actively searching for an 090). I also have an 038 Magnum. And will have an 028 AV Super on the way soon. I also have a few smallish Poulan's (33 cc and 46 cc) to lend out to friends, neighbors, etc.

What other pro vintage Stihl's would you want to have to complete my modest collection? I'm thinking one of the smaller pro models for limbing, but don't know which one. And maybe something medium large -- between the 038 Magnum and the 070? Maybe an 066? Or an 050/051?

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,
I would think an 056 Magll would be high on that list.
Harder to find models, at least around here, are 07/07S.
An 026 for a limbing saw.
My 2 cents.

Not as vintage but 026,036,044, and 064 are always on my older stihl list. I'm particularly fond of the 036 and the 064. 60ccs is a nice do it all size and the 064 is a lightweight higher cc saw. 075/076s make nice milling saws.

026's are certainly plentiful here. There are 31 for sale right now on eBay.de (Germany). That sounds about right for a limbing saw.

I wasn't familiar with the 07/07S, but that's a pretty cool looking saw. Those can be found here for a reasonable price. I'll add it to the shopping list.

I'm not seeing many 056's for sale anywhere.

Thanks for the input.

Agreed on the 026. The 036 and 044 are pretty close to my 038 Magnum; looking to fill a larger void. The 064 is a good call; have my eye on one of those. And agree on the 075/076 as well, but they're not terribly common here.

EDIT - I already have an 070 -- that should fit the bill for milling. But thinking about a larger saw that's equipped with a brake - maybe an 084 or 088?

Thanks for the input.

Are you hunting saws in Italy or stateside? I've got no idea what you'd run across overseas.

Ok; I'm not terribly familiar with these. What would be the older version of the 026?

Thanks

Scott
024 (came out in the mid 1980's, Acre's site got that 1 wrong) was the original release of what became the 026 then the ms260 which was discontinued about 3ish years ago. A majority of the parts interchange. Nice limbing saws and small firewood. For strictly limbing for ease of the operator, not speed I haven't found anything I like better then an 025 which is not a pro model but the ones I've been involved in using stood up and long . An 020 might be a worthy consideration, the came in top or rear handle versions, I haven't experienced using them to any extent myself. I never cared much for an 015 so never used them much. 018 works much like a smaller 025.
Mid range vintage I like the 041, super version is a big boost in cc, 045 which as the 024 was the original design of the 026-260, it is the original version of the mentioned 056 super. Loggers around here were using 051's and 075's in the 70's, later 70's mostly 045's when they came out and continued buying the 056's until the 1990's which were refined 045's. 024's,034's, 044,064's, 084's, I think all came out in the mid 80's and overlapped sometimes several years with earlier models. In my opinion that generation was a big jump in power to weight. If you cut a variety of wood, the 034 and 044 would probably be the most used saws providing your in average shape physically.
When I think of older vintage I also was impressed with an S10 (top or rear handle), 031's-032's are nice and I really liked the 075 I had. 042-048 were a shortish production but I am very fond of them. Had 1 at work was used and abused, held up extremely well like most Stihls and I liked the handling better then the 056 super we had and it pulled a 25" bar with authority. A ton of models I can't speak for cause I never used or were around them enough.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I think I'm set with mid-range with my 038 Magnum.

I like the 075, but I already have the 070, so that fills the "vintage non-chain brake over 100 cc good for milling" saw category. I'm thinking that an 084 or 088 would be a good one to add for when you need something big for something other than milling.

As for a smaller limbing saw, I like something vintage, but am thinking that I would like something with a chain brake here, too. The 020 sounds like a good option too -- they come in at 32-35 cc's and some came with a chain brake. I think an 009 would work as well, based on what I'm seeing online, but maybe this isn't a pro model?

Thanks again,

Scott
