The Stump

OH MY GOSH! I truly am astonished at the power of Human Will.
Look since you have brought this to the attention of everyone who comes to this forum, I recommend you bury it with Dirt, plant a new tree sapling somewhere where you are happy with. Nurture that Tree and never forget that when life stumps you perhaps keeping the stump is your only alternative!
Take it to the limit buddy!

I don't know about other people on this site but I'm sure those that grind would tell you that if you would have ground that stump down 12-16 inches , I charge extra for, remove all the grindings then bring in top soil and pack it down your done. I do it all the time and have not had any one call back in 8 years about sink holes. 9 ft. stump= 108 inches ($3.00 any inch when i go 12 inches deep) plus at the most 3 yards. of screened top soil $26.00 a yrd. I wouldn't even charge for the seed I buy it by the skid. And $50.00 to remove the chips total $452.00 AND if you every have a problem with it sinking I come back for FREE |IT'S IN WRITTING NO!!!!headaches PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus when I'm done you can even put in sprinklers

I can't believe you couldn't dig it out with the Case 580. Should be plenty of breakout force to dig down around that .

So with the cutting, digging, backhoeing, drilling, blasting, burning and pressure washing - how many hours on just the stump?
Have it ground and move the grindings to a compost pile.
Or, it seems you really have a synergistic relationship with this stump. You may consider it a base for some type of cool looking landscaping.

Stumps by hand are 90% digging and 10% stump. I understand the personal vendetta and I will be very honest, dig more dirt arnound and under it as best you can to see the roots that need to be dealt with. It will seem like you have gained nothing, then it will go all at once. One it is loose, use what you got to pull that heavy mutha out of there. Lots of work left, but best of luck form th Pacific NW.

Houston, seems we have had a meteorite impact in Concorville pa. Impact has been described as a loud sonic boom, the smell of black powder and now a resident has started to excavate the site looking for new life forms.

:hmm3grin2orange: this thread is hilarious.

I am speechless that nobody has mentioned explosives yet LOLOLOLOL

Man invented machines, but forgot about the birds ...

Timber again thanx for making me chuckle all night. Once you do pry this beast from its pit are you going to mount it? It would seem worthy of a permanent place around the fire pit somewhere. I can hear the story already "ya it was the spring of 07 when I started huntin that one......"

A guy advertises over here.

No ugly excavations and craters that need filling. :D

I think he needs to download these pics as proof. :hmm3grin2orange:

You guys have inspired me greatly !!! I took off work today to tackle the stump yet another time. And yes I did try explosives, the black powder wedge was a special experience. Notice the 10 x 20 white canopy in the picture that didn't fare well to the blast. I will post my pictures today if I win , or maybe I can get my wife to post pictures of the ambulance taking me away if I fail. Stay Tuned. Usually I would take the path of least resistance. Every piano has a bad key, and this stump is my bad key and it keeps playing me whenever I gaze out the window !!!!

The OP mentioned black powder.

Sorry, I overlooked the charcoal comment :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

It strikes me that someone declares war on a stump and turns his backyard into a moon landscape, just to avoid woodchips. Not to mention the agony and work involved.

funny,those americans

Hey don't paint us all with the Timber_Hitch brush! I would have rented a stump grinder or got it ground by someone.

He DID use explosives - black powder to be exact! :angry2:
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned using an old chainsaw, we have old crappy ones just for stump cutting!:chainsaw:

Lets set up the lawn chairs and BBQ around this thing:cheers:

This is WAR!

'After hours of battle, just as Timber Hitch is about to win, something goes terribly wrong.'............................GAH!
:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Sorry *hangs head*, I just couldn't resist :(

But seriously, good luck man, 'May the force be with you!', and make sure your camera has fresh batteries eh!
If you get one side dug down (opposite the direction of pull) try running your chain over the the top and consider using something like a 12" diam., 8ft log, upright under it beside the stump to give some extra lift, just another crazy thought, I go now.

Beavers!

Oh heck, I'd just cover it over with dirt and let nature take it's course. I'll bet in a few years what remains is good grass fertilizer. It's just a stupid stump after all and doesn't seem to be in the way of any other construction.

Halarious!

Hit it with an ax everytime you have a bad day. Piss on it and laugh. I have an "angry stump" that I take my aggression out on. Coming up on year 8. I have a lot of anger, but I will probaby grind it in the long run.:angry2:

Man, that was halarious! I'm still laughing!  :D
